Exploring the Beauty of Machu Picchu

When it comes to visiting Peru is considered incomplete without the exploration of the majestic Inca citadel of Machu Picchu. There is no doubt that Machu Picchu is the most famous archaeological site to explore in South America. Also, it is an excellent example of the finest Inca architecture. As the Spanish conquerors failed to find this site, it was almost intact when Machu Picchu was rediscovered in 1911 by Hiram Bingham. One of the highlights of this site is its location, perched on the side of a cloud forest mountain at 2438 meters above sea level, lying 75 km from Cusco, the Inca capital. While exploring the site, you will be astonished by the beauty and brilliance of the Inca architects and builders.

Meet the Other Machu Picchu - Choquequirao

Choquequirao, the renowned twin-city of Machu Picchu, is located 44 km southwest of its twin. The city lies in the “eyebrow of the jungle” (Ceja de selva) of the Cusco region, which is more than 3033 meters above sea level. This citadel is well-preserved despite having a varied architectural style from that of Machu Picchu. You will discover amazing Andean terraces, squares, enclosures and temples here. The site is still being excavated by archaeologists and historians who hypothesize that Choquequirao could have been an administrative center, lookout point and food warehouse in the northern region of Cusco. Also, there are speculations that this citadel might have been a ceremonial center for the Inca Pachamama and other deities. Indeed this site is worth exploring.

Knowing Cusco

When planning to visit the Inca citadel, you will almost certainly pass through Cusco. Located in the Huatanay valley, Cusco city is more than 3450 meters above sea level in the high Andes. Did you know that Cusco was the capital of the Inca empire known as Tawantinsuyo? The downtown hosts Spanish colonial churches built on ancient Inca temples located in the main square, one of the most beautiful places you will see in South America. Cusco is jam-packed with markets where you can buy souvenirs along with some fascinating museums to visit. Do not forget to visit the Plaza de Armas of Cusco and the surrounding historical buildings.
