Barú Island is one of the closest of the many islands just off the coast of Cartagena. Although it’s not as tropical or luxurious as some of the other islands in the area, such as the Rosario Islands, it’s got a lively atmosphere that’s hard to beat. People come here at the weekends to swim in the deep blue waters, relax on the sandy beaches, and escape the city.

San Andrés

The tiny island of San Andrés lies just off the coast of Nicaragua, but is found in Colombian seas, despite mainland Colombia being 805km away. With a fascinating history as a pirate haven, this ex English colony and now a Colombian Island, San Andrés is a cultural melting pot and an island paradise where you can swim through crystal-clear waters and enjoy deliciously, fresh seafood.

Head to the west side of the island, where the beaches turn to cliffs and where the snorkeling is second to none. Once here, you’ll find a little shoreside bar and restaurant called Reggae Roots. The Rasta-themed cabana is the best spot to watch the sunset over the Caribbean. Here, you can jump off the cliff-side diving board and swim in the clear waters before dark.
