Boutique hotels are usually found in modernised colonial buildings and are a great option if you are looking for something with a little more originality. The next options are the bed and breakfasts, which are exactly what they say they are! In Oaxaca, there is actually an association of B and Bs. Always check that they come with the facilities you need, for example, WIFI if you need it. Around the Yucatan, there are a19th century haciendas for an alternative option. There are even options to do a farm stay to connect with nature, such as around Puerto Vallarta. Hostels are great if you are looking to meet other travellers or on a tight budget. They are widely available in the beach areas. These usually have shared facilities and are basic but with great locations. Beach locations offer caba&ntilde;as and are quite rustic but right on the beach. Camping is not recommended on the beaches for safety reasons and there are cheaper options in any case.&nbsp;

Accommodation

The Mexican Peso rules in Mexico. The country is, in general, a Cash country. Credit cards are accepted in hotels and restaurant but cash rules. ATMs are widely available and its best to withdraw in Mexican Pesos (M$). Avoid using ATMs at night for safety reasons. All major towns and cities have an exchange house to changes USA dollars. Other currencies may be more difficult outside of touristic destinations.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Money

Mexico is probably a lot safer than you actually think. The media has painted a pretty picture of the issues of drugs gangs in Mexico. However, this is rare and will not affect your trip; In any case, this generally happens away from tourist destinations.&nbsp;
Local people are friendly and helpful and unless you are involved in illicit activities you will probably be fine! &nbsp;
Petty crime is an issue and unattended items will disappear. Pickpocketing is common. Common sense goes a long way in Mexico like many other destinations and if you have any suspicions about the safety of a place, then best avoid it. Always go with the gut!&nbsp;
Take photocopies of your important documents and carry them with you. Leave your originals in a hotel safe.&nbsp;
It is a macho culture, so single women attract some unwanted attention sometimes. Try and travel with others or make friends with a local lady that will usually help you feel safer. Confidence goes a long way in Mexico!&nbsp;

Safety

Homosexuality is legal as is gay marriage. While the government has an open-minded, liberal attitude, it is definitely "frowned upon" on a cultural level. Most people looking for things to do in Creel will find themselves visiting its outskirts, as it&rsquo;s the towns surrounding area that put Creel on the tourist map. With a population of just over 5000, the town consists of only a few streets but plenty of hotels and tour companies eager to help you explore the natural beauty around the town. <a href="https://vaexpeditions.com/package/luxury-el-chepe-express">Creel </a>was once primarily a logging town and the last stop of the Kansas City, Mexico and Orient Railway, the predecessor to El Chepe. Once the Ferrocarril Chihuahua Pacifico (Chepe) was completed in 1961, Creel&rsquo;s tourism started to pick up and has now become its primary economy.&nbsp;

Chihuahua is the home of the Mexican revolution. A few giants of Mexican history lived in Chihuahua at one point,&nbsp; either out of choice or under duress. The folk hero and revolutionary, Pancho Villa had a home in <a href="https://vaexpeditions.com/package/luxury-el-chepe-express">Chihuahua, </a>and in the courtyard of his mansion is the Dodge car in which he was assassinated in 1923.&nbsp; The&nbsp; independence leader Miguel Hidalgo, who was executed at the Federal Palace in 1811, and the independence leader President Benito Ju&aacute;rez both met their demise in this historical city. The city today ishome to excellent musuems and colonial buildings which help explain the colourful history of the city&acute;s times gone by.

Palenque

This quaint, picturesque town, nestled in the mountains of Chiapas will take you back to colonial times.
