Watching a bunch of tough wrestlers is one thing but have you heard about the feisty cholitas in La Paz? These wonderful women battling in the wrestling ring is perhaps the most unusual and off-the-wall tourist attraction in La Paz. Fully kitted out in their traditional dress, these ferocious indigenous women are known for their array of athletic moves to overcome their male counterparts, encouraging the roaring crowd into a frenzy. This is what you can expect about this incredibly unique spectacle on the outskirts of La Paz.
Cholita Wrestlers
What is a cholita?
The word ‘cholita’ used to be a derogatory term used exclusively to belittle indigenous women for their clothing and their traditions. However more recently, an indigenous rights revolution, fronted by the Aymara president Evo Morales, has restored a sense of ethnic pride among these once marginalized people. Cholitas can now don their traditional pollera (skirt), shawl and bowler hat without fear or reprimand, both in the streets of La Paz and even in the wrestling ring.
and it begins....
The history of Cholita Wrestling
Although wrestling has been popular in Bolivia since the 1950s, it wasn’t until 2005 that women began to get involved in this epic sport in La Paz. Around that time, indigenous women who were victims of domestic violence, began to practice the sport as a way to make friends, relieve stress and regain some kind of empowerment. A wrestling promoter in La Paz, by the name of Juan Mamani realized the untapped potential of women wrestlers with some excellent marketing techniques, brought the activity into the professional sphere.
Equality in the ring
The show Itself
The WWE may have a much higher profile, but these women from the altiplano do have a pretty impressive repertoire of theatrical stunts. Expect both genders to perform holds, chokes, body slams and high-flying acrobatic manoeuvres throughout the show as they smack, slap, punch, kick and pull each other’s pigtails until one goes down for the count. The entire spectacle lasts around four hours, but you can come and go as you please.
On-lookers
Audience interaction
Audience participation is a whole part of the extravagant spectacle and if you find yourself sitting on the front row, expect to be included in the activities. The performers and promoters of Cholitas Wrestling have become adept at giving audiences exactly what they want: an action-packed, fun-filled show, unlike you have ever seen. Expect adventurous cholitas to steal kisses from audience members, while drinks and popcorn are being thrown around like confetti just to add to the show.
