Is Belize Dangerous?

Belize is a tiny country that has the unwanted title as one of the worst five countries in the world for murders, according to the UN Office on Drugs and Crime. Violent crimes like home invasions, armed robberies, and sexual assaults take place on a regular basis, even during daylight hours. Gang violence, largely centred in Belize City is a huge problem and the south side of Belize City, in particular, should be avoided at all times. Issues in the tourist areas mainly consist of burglary, pickpocketing, and hotel room theft, as opposed to violent crime. While crimes against visitors are taken seriously, the police force in Belize is typically understaffed and poorly equipped, so their ability to respond is somewhat limited.

Now that I have scared the life out of you, most travellers actually enjoy their holidays in Belize without any incidents whatsoever, especially on a visit to the Cayes off the coast of Belize. These areas have very little crime and when something does happen, they are usually opportunistic thefts or non-violent crimes. There have been a few high-profile murders of tourists and expatriates who live in Belize recently but tourism is generally unaffected by crime. Cruise ship visitors who disembark for a few hours at the port have been targeted by scammers, where tourists are offered drugs to set the person up for arrest, who will generally offer a payment of a substantial fine to avoid prosecution. Buying illegal drugs in Belize is generally not a good plan, as visitors will suffer heavy penalties and jail time, so this kind of activity is best avoided!

Is Belize Safe for Solo Travellers?

Belize is easy to navigate, which usually helps solo travellers have safe journeys. But anyone planning to explore the country on their own should pack a fair amount of “street smart”.  Keep an eye out and be aware of any suspicious behaviour to avoid being targeted and stick to safe areas, stick to main streets, and be aware of your surroundings. Don't go out alone at night and stay away from dark side streets. Those who do venture out at night  in Belize should take a registered taxi rather than walking. If you go hiking, join a group and make sure your guide is experienced and from a reputable company. Basically take the same preacuations as in any city in the world and you will usually be ok.

Is Belize Safe for Female Travellers?

While women with sufficient travel experience may feel comfortable to explore Belize on their own, it is not recommended, travel in a group, where possible. Sexual assaults can occur here, as they can in a number of destinations and sexual harassment such as catcalling and stares are common in the country, especially on the beaches and islands. Never hitchhike or accept taxi rides with other passengers, unknown to you and be aware of the drivers behaviour, take an authorized taxi at all times. Don’t drink too much alcohol and always keep an eye on your food and drinks. Don't accept snacks, beverages, chewing gum, or cigarettes from people you don't know. It has en reported that local peope may lace your items with drugs that put you at risk of sexual assault and robbery.

Safety Tips for LGBTQ+ Travelers

Homosexuality became legal in Belize in 2016. Belize is conservative-minded country, even the younger generations, so it is a good idea to be aware and blending in with the local community is a good idea,as in a lot of destinations. Verbal or physical abuse and harassment has taken place if you are overt about your orientation. Choose accommodations carefully and be discreet in most situations, including with public displays of affection. Travellers are unlikely to find many gay bars or clubs in Belize, but resorts host some LGBTQ+ friendly events.
