The small country of Belize can be found along the Caribbean coast of Central America. This tropical paradise that has much to offer travellers, from pristine beaches, lush rainforests, ancient Mayan ruins and some of the best scuba diving sites in the world. It is no wonder that there is plenty to see and do in this magnificent country. Whether you're looking for an active, adventurous invigorating experience, or a relaxing vacation in the sun, Belize has it all! …. delivering a few surprises along the way also!  Here are a few ways to plan ahead for your trip:

Best Time to Visit: 

The weather in Belize is warm and tropical all year long, but some months are better than others to visit the country. For instance, April and May are an excellent time to go, as there are fewer crowds and the summer rains have yet to set in. Peak season is in January if you can help it, as the crowds as this time of the year is super busy.

Language:

Belize was a British colony for more than a century, meaning that it is the only country in Central America where English is the official language. Visitors will also hear variations of Spanish and Creole in certain areas of the country, however on the whole, English is widely spoken, making for a less challenging vacation.

The official currency used in Belize is the Belize dollar. It features a fixed exchange rate of 2 Belize dollars to $1 USD, and both currencies are accepted in most places.

Getting Around:

While most cities and towns are easy to walk around. Taxis and buses are a cheap, reliable way to travel throughout Belize. Numerous bus routes run throughout the country, and hopping on and off these buses is an affordable way to explore the region. Travelers looking for extra flexibility may consider renting a bike or a car, depending on their needs.

Travel Tip* Belize may be located along the coast in Central America, but it operates more like a Caribbean Island in terms of time and schedule. In other words, you'll be on "island time" throughout your stay, so don't expect anyone to be in a hurry or to show up precisely at the appointed time. The country has a way of making you relax and timekeeping is a major part of this process.

Things to Do: 

Belize is generally considered as one of the best scuba diving destinations in the world, attracting divers and snorkellers from all over the planet.  Back on the mainland of Belize, hikers will find plenty to adore, particularly if they enjoy bird spotting and wildlife with many jungle trails. The ancient Mayan ruins found throughout the country are a big attraction to the country, allowing visitors to explore some of the best-preserved archaeological sites in Central America.

Dive the Great Blue Hole: There are a number of coral reefs forming the second largest barrier reef in the world and even shipwrecks to visit while scuba diving in Belize. However, the famous Great Blue Hole is, without a doubt, the most spectacular underwater attraction. This submerged sinkhole is more than 305 metres diameter and 123 metres deep, making it a top destination for divers.

Wander through the Mayan Site of Xunantunich: Perhaps Belize's most well-preserved Mayan site, Xunantunich is one of the most attractive, authentic destinations in the entire country. Dating back to the seventh century, the site offers the chance to hike past ancient temples and plazas that were once home to thousands of people.

Spot wildlife: With more than 575 bird species, an array of monkeys, iguanas, crocodiles, and other species, Belize is a favourite destination for those who enjoy wildlife encounters. One of the most incredible experiences in Belize is tracking jaguars in the jungle, where this elusive big cat can still be found thriving.

What to Eat and Drink 

Belizean cuisine takes inspiration from its surroundings and uses many culinary traditions to this day. Travellers will typically find plenty of fresh seafood on offer, often cooked with of Caribbean seasoning and spices and accompanied with vegetables and fruits. Lobster and conch are typical delicacies, while classic regional dishes such as beans and rice and ceviche are extremely popular. Everything tends to be fresh, flavoursome, and maybe even a little spicy, so try it all!

The local tropical fruits are perfect for making refreshing drinks, with plenty of cafes and juice stands, offering their fresh products. Those same juices can also be used to make cocktails, although the Caribbean staple of local rum is generally the favourite when it comes to alcoholic beverages. The local Belikin beer, is refreshing on a hot day, is brewed locally and can be found just about everywhere.

Where to Stay 

Options on where to stay in Belize, are varied and visitors will find everything from luxurious resorts to rustic hostels. There are even homestay options for those looking to experience a more unique and cultural experience, there are even Airbnb options too. Most of the larger resorts can be found along the Caribbean Coast, providing quick and easy access to the beach and water. Further inland, you can discover many distinctive eco-lodges tucked away in the rainforest. No matter what type of accommodation you are looking for, you are guaranteed to find the perfect place to hang your hat in Belize!

Getting There 

The simplest way to get to Belize is by flying there. Flights generally arrive to the Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport (BZE) located in Belize City. Visitors can also reach Belize by bus from Mexico and Guatemala if they are traveling from one of those two countries as well.

Culture and Customs 

Belize is generally a conservative country, so travellers are encouraged to dress conservatively. Casual dress is accepted almost everywhere in the country, although visitors should avoid wearing revealing clothing, especially when visiting local churches. 

Tipping is not customary in Belize, but visitors are often expected to include a tip. The general rule of thumb, is 10 percent on taxi rides and meals or for any excellent service you receive.

Money Saving Tips 

Use public transportation. Buses and taxis are cheap, plentiful, and easy to use throughout all of Belize. Travelers can save some cash by ditching the rental car and sticking to public transit instead., just keep an eye on your pockets! 

Visit during the off-season. Travelers can save a lot on airfare, accommodation and tours if they visit during the low season, which is typically April and May.

Eat street food. Avoid the touristy restaurants and enjoy some tasty street food instead. The options are plentiful, fresh, delicious, and cheap!

Fly into Cancun: Flights into Belize can be somewhat expensive. You can get much better deals by flying into Cancun, then take the bus across the border. The ride is very affordable, and it is easy to travel between the two countries.
