Visa Exemption

Mexico offers visa exemption to citizens of numerous countries for tourism, business, or transit purposes. Travelers from countries such as the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and most European Union nations can enter Mexico without a visa, provided their stay doesn't exceed the specified period. Generally, this period is 180 days (6 months), but it's crucial to verify the exact duration based on your nationality. If you enter Mexico through the visa-on-arrival scheme, your passport will be stamped to show how many days you have been granted entry for. Check the ‘Temporalidad’ section of the visa stamp for this information. You do not have an automatic right to the 180-day maximum stay length. If you stay longer than you have been granted, you may be taken to the Immigration facilities, while they investigate, with the risk of being deported. There are no COVID-19-specific entry requirements regardless of COVID-19 vaccination status.

Passport validity

If you are visiting Mexico, your passport should be valid for the proposed duration of your stay in Mexico. Citizens from all countries are required to present a valid passport for entry to Mexico. That includes all U.S. citizens, including children. They are required to present a valid passport or passport card for travel beyond the "border zone" into Mexico, with the "border zone" defined as an area within 20 to 30km (12-19 miles) of the United States. The passport should be valid for, at minimum, 6 months from your time of arrival in the country.

Tourist Card/Visitor's Permit

While a visa may not be required for visa-exempt travelers, obtaining a Tourist Card or Forma Migratoria Multiple (FMM) is necessary. The Tourist Card serves as a visitor's permit and is typically obtained onboard the aircraft or at the port of entry, including airports and land border crossings. It grants a stay of up to 180 days for tourism or business purposes. It's important to retain the FMM throughout your visit and present it upon departure.

To leave the country, you will have to present your passport with a stamp showing the number of days granted. If you lose your passport, you will need to pay a fee to replace the entry stamp. The cost of a replacement is approximately $600 Mexican Pesos, which is payable at a bank, migration officers do not accept cash.
