Uxmal
Uxmal is a historical site in the Yucatan. The name Uxmal is Mayan for "Three times built." This comes from the main pyramid in the area, which was built on existing structures. The ancient ruins seem to come out of nowhere, and the main Pyramid of the Magician rises well above the tree line so you can see for miles in every direction. It was occupied by different royal families until 1450. This happened when the League of Mayapán, a political band of city-states, ended. Uxmal was an important site of worship for the rain god Chaac. All along the Pyramid of the Magician are carvings representing the rain god.

Kabah
Kabah is one of the few Maya settlements in the area that has retained its original name (meaning 'the powerful hand'). Second, only to Uxmal in the Puuc Region, this is a hugely impressive sight, spread out on both sides of the main road, though at present, only one side of the complex is open to the public. The site was occupied in the 3rd century BC, but most of the structures standing today, date from the 7th – the 11th centuries.

Chichen Itza
At its height, Chichen Itza was home to Mayan people from all areas of the Yucatan Peninsula. The city exhibits many architectural styles reminiscent of central Mexico and of the Puuc and Chenes styles found in the Northern Maya lowlands. Rising from the dense jungles of the Yucatan, Chichen Itza grew to prominence from the 6th century A.D. onward. By the 10th century, Chichen Itza was a sprawling city with a dense trade network that reached as far as the Caribbean coastline. A center of religious fervor, the city’s temples and sacred cenotes attracted pilgrims across the Mayan world. Chichen Itza fell into ruin after the overthrow of the elite in the 12th century and the onset of the Mayan decline. By the time the Spanish conquistadors first laid eyes on a long-abandoned Chichen Itza in the 16th century, there was little that hadn’t been swallowed by the forest.
