Festivities in the rainforest
Historically, the Maya Riviera was an important religious and commercial centre for the ancient Maya civilization, and there are many archaeological remains to discover in the area, such as Tulum Cobá and Muyil. For hundreds of years, the area was isolated from the rest of the country as it was somewhat difficult to get to. As Cancun developed, some travellers wanted a more relaxed vibe that the mega-resort areas of Cancun and the Riviera Maya was discovered as more off the beaten track holiday destination. Although there are large hotels and tourist amenities in the area, there are many eco-tourism options that allow visitors to experience the incredible natural prowess and amazing biodiversity of this pristine region of Mexico.
Playa del Carmen
Playa del Carmen was once a sleepy fishing-village but has grown into a cosmopolitan town, and today is one of the biggest along the Mayan riviera. It still however, maintains its small town feel and is easy to walk around. If you're interested in shopping, nightlife and fine dining, this is the place for you and the town boasts a wonderful beach. Playacar is a nearby resort area offering more upscale accommodation and all-inclusive options, if you are looking for an element of comfort.
Chankanaab National Park, Cozumel, Mexico
Cozumel, the largest island in the Mexican Caribbean and is a short ferry-ride from Playa del Carmen. It's a great spot for scuba diving and snorkelling as the crystal-clear water offers excellent visibility. The island mainly consists of untouched rainforest and lagoons with many native species living there. Chankanaab National Park has a botanical garden featuring tropical plants, and Chankanaab Lagoon, is a natural aquarium with over 60 species of tropical fish, crustaceans and corals.
Tulum
Tulum, during Mayan times was a centre and trading port. The ruins can be found in spectacular location on a cliff face, overlooking the Caribbean Sea. With many accommodation options in the town, for those who fall in love with this magical place. Tulum is the only Mayan ruins located on the coast and offer spectacular views.

Ecological Parks and Reserves
Xcaret Eco Theme Park offers many activities for all ages. A full day can be spent in Xcaret swimming in underground rivers, snorkelling, watching a re-enactment of the pre-hispanic ball game, visiting ancient Mayan ruins and watching a spectacular cultural show that is presented every evening. In Xel-Ha Park, underwater currents of fresh water combine with salt water producing a unique ecosystem which is home to a number of tropical fish, making it the perfect place to go snorkelling. Other activities include floating along the river on inner tubes, swinging over cenotes and swimming with dolphins. If you get tired of being in the water you can go on an ecological walking tour through the surrounding jungle, or kick-back and relax on "Hammock Island."
Aktun Chen
Aktun Chen covers almost 1000 acres of rainforest and is home to 3 caves with underground rivers. An easy walking tour of the main cave lasts about an hour and allows visitors to witness impressive rock formations. Walking through the park's jungle paths offers the chance to glimpse some of the area's wildlife.
Xaman Ha
Xaman Ha Aviary in Playacar provides a natural habitat to over 60 species of tropical birds. As you wander along the pathways and trails, you will be accompanied by toucans, macaws, flamingos, egrets, herons and some other amazing bird species, native to the Mayan Riviera area.
Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve
Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve is one of the largest protected areas in Mexico and has 6475 km2 unspoiled natural rainforest with unexcavated Mayan ruins, fresh water canals, mangroves, lagoons and inlets. Visitors can learn all about the diverse wildlife that lives here and even participate in conservation projects. Ecological tours, kayaking tours and fly fishing are all available at the reserve. Please be aware that regular sunblocks are not allowed in the park, because they contaminate the habitat and special eco-friendly sunblocks are available for purchase throughout the area.
