What time of year is best to visit for the perfect Panama vacation?
Obviously, everyone’s schedule is different, so when you can visit will heavily rely on when you are able to take time off to travel. Panama’s busiest tourist season runs from early December to early May. The reasons for this are mostly related to weather as well as winter and spring holiday breaks for families. There is no “winter” or “summer”, per se, in Panama. Rather, there is a “dry season” and a “wet season.” The dry season is noted for having low humidity, and next to no rain, which makes outdoor activities more comfortable, and Panama’s adventure tourism options a bit easier to participate in.

During the wet season (late May-November), it rains almost daily, with high humidity throughout the country. Don’t let that turn you off from a Panama vacation, though! Typically the rain lasts only an hour or two, and the humidity can be escaped on the ocean, in the mountains, or inside in A/C. The season shouldn’t stop you from taking a Panama vacation, but rather help guide you as to what type of Panama vacation to take. Also, during the wet season, Panama’s flora and fauna flourish from the rain. The entire country is green and glows with life. You’ll find less volume when it comes to visitors, too, which is an advantage for people who don’t like crowds, or those looking for lower prices.

How far in advance to book
To book the best Panama vacation for you, your friends, or your family, start by picking how many days you will travel for. Once you know what days you can travel on, and how many, book your flight first, and then your hotels. You can do all of this through online booking platforms, or contact a Panama vacation specialist online, like Va Expeditions and work with them to book everything in advance. If you book yourself, you may want to wait until you arrive to pick which activities and excursions you participate in. Travel can be spontaneous, and you may be inspired to do something you didn’t plan on previously after spending even just one day in Panama.
Panamanian Sloth
Time your visit for budget-friendly deals and great weather. The high season coincides with the dry season, mid-December to early April when prices are generally higher. The major festivals of Christmas, New Year, Carnival, and Semana Santa see a price increase in the capital, but not as much as the beaches, where most city-dwellers spend the holidays. Mid-April to early December is the cheapest time to visit Panama City, as long as you don’t mind getting soaked by the rain. Most deluges last only an hour or two in the afternoon, but the season gets wetter as it goes on. In the depths of it, the skies can be overcast for days, but the rains are usually intermittent, and the cloud cover can bring relief from the relentless Panamanian sun.
Portobelo Festival, Panama
So now you know when to visit, how far ahead should you book in advance? We recommend booking your Panama trip at least 3 months in advance. This way, you can choose your preferred activities, book your flights and accommodation and start planning your activities with our assistance. If you plan to come in high season, then 6 months ahead is the better option as popular accommodations sell out quickly, especially around the time of major festivals and holidays, especially Christmas/ New Year's holiday or Spring Break. Travelers visiting outside of the busy dry season months can often book last minute, though 2-3 months' notice is still recommended to take advantage of the best airfare rates.
Boquete Waterfall, Panama
We usually recommend that you wait to book your international flights until after your tour is confirmed. The sooner that we arrange your tour, the sooner that you can take advantage of flight deals as they become available. We are often able to accommodate last-minute travelers as well (some even departing in less than one month!), so give us a call and we will do our best! For last-minute bookings, it helps to be flexible and organized. Your first choice tour may not be available for your selected dates, can probably recommend some other similar options that would be equally interesting! Many lodges will not hold spaces less than 30 days before departure so for last-minute bookings, you may be asked to send your registration form and trip payment in right away to secure your spaces.
