This Peruvian fruit has recently made its way into health food stores, worldwide, for its nutritional value. Here are some lesser-known facts about this amazing superfruit and Inca dessert.

In its natural form, lucuma looks like an avocado or unripe mango with a green outer skin. Once peeled, you’ll find a bright yellow fleshy pulp that tastes similar to caramel. Its dry texture isn’t typical of many fruits, which is probably why most Peruvians do not eat it in its natural form. However local people adore this fruit and use it to make ice cream, yoghurt, smoothies and other delectable delights.

The health benefits of lucuma are incredible and even as far back as the Inca civilization, local people hold this fruit in high esteem. This golden-yellow fruit is even sometimes called “Inca gold” and is believed to have aphrodisiacal effects. This sumptuous fruit is jam-packed with healthy components like beta carotene, iron, zinc, vitamin B3, calcium and protein. It is famed for its anti-aging properties and promotes cardiovascular health. It has become increasingly popular to use lucuma powder instead of buying the fresh fruit, which is more difficult to find, especially outside of its season (summertime).
