Argentina is a relatively healthy country to visit. In general, the usual travel vaccinations are enough. There have been a few reported cased of mosquito-related sicknesses in the north such as Zika, dengue, yellow fever and malaria. &nbsp;
Water is generally safe and bottled water is widely available to buy. In more rural areas take the usual precautions, boil and filter your water, just in case!
Altitude can be an issue in some higher elevation regions or when mountain climbing, for example. Take the necessary acclimatization precautions and ascend slowly. Headaches, nausea, bad stomach, dizziness and insomnia are all common symptoms of altitude sickness. Although sometimes they could use a little more imagination, the chimichurri is the perfect accompaniment to any meaty treat and indeed any dish! Asado is the national dish and is any cut of meat, served barbecue style. In general, asados are cooked 'well done'; in fact, any cut of meat is usually served 'well done'. Non-meat eaters can enjoy a range of empanadas and pizzas and delicious bread. Mass immigration from Italy means that there are a lot of Italian options available. Pastas are served with abundant ricotta cheese, tomatoes and onions, the main sources of flavoursome food. Pasta is generally cooked well, so make sure to ask for "al diente" if you prefer a firmer pasta. Pizza is on the whole, a decent option, but could maybe use a little more imagination with the toppings. They generally have a thicker crust and usually are massive, meant to be shared. Empanadas are delicious with usually a cheese, meat or vegetable option, generally at the discretion of the person who baked it. Lomito is a steak sandwich, served on pitta bread, "choripans" (sausage sandwiches) are a really popular snack or tostados which are toasted ham and cheese sandwiches, Milanesas are breaded beef burgers&hellip;hamburger style. Dulce de leche is for the sweeter tooth! This creamy, toffee-type caramel. This is used on bread, in pastries, as cake fillings and even ice-cream flavours. If you like sweet dishes, then it is a sure-fire probability that dulce de leche will be included somewhere!&nbsp;
*Argentinians eat late! It is totally normal to have your dinner at 11pm or midnight, especially in the city areas!&nbsp;

Eating and Drinking

With inflation and recent economic crashes, there remains a 25% unemployment rate which has given rise to the increase in petty crimes such as pickpocketing and opportunist thefts. Violent crime occasionally happens in big cities but is more likely to be directed towards local business people and not generally tourists. Buenos Aires

These immense "cataratas" are mind-blowingly amazing, with a variety of flora and fauna in this tropical jungle region. The Argentinian side of Iguazu boasts 80% of the incredible waterfalls, yet Brazil owns most of the national park of Iguazu. The actual border between the 3 countries runs along the "devils throat" canyon and the Paran&aacute; river. The Devil's throat falls, are found within Argentinian territory. The falls were notes as a Unesco world heritage site on the Argentinian side, in 1986. At the end of the day, the<a href="https://vaexpeditions.com/package/whirlwind-argentina"> Iguazu waterfalls</a> are absolutely majestic and we believe that they should be seen from both sides of the border.&nbsp;

This is a must for the adrenalin junky! The neighbouring cities of Salta and Cordoba,&nbsp; well almost &hellip;.as they are 700 km apart! are beautiful colonial cities in the north of Argentina. <a href="https://vaexpeditions.com/package/full-on-argentinian-wine">Salta </a>is found in the foothills of <a href="https://vaexpeditions.com/package/argentina-the-undiscovered-northwest">The Andes </a>and is famous for its wine and parrillas. They farm a lot of the Argentinian beef in this area and the <a href="https://vaexpeditions.com/package/the-united-estates-of-argentina">gaucho influence</a> is evident, as well as the Spanish colonial influence. Juyuy is next to Salta and offers a totally different perspective of the North of Argentina. While Cordoba is a much bigger city and more industrial than Salta, Juyuy is totally off the beaten track remoteness, Although these 3 destinations are close by, they have their different and individual charms, making the North west of Argentina an excellent part of the country to visit.

Is the best city to appreciate the Spanish colonial architecture. At the foothills of the Andean mountain range, it is a perfect mixture of <a href="https://vaexpeditions.com/package/argentine-estates">Gaucho culture </a>and Spanish history. The wines are excellent, the food is amazing and this can also be the perfect stop- off point if you are planning to cross into Chile or Bolivia in the north.&nbsp;

Salta

Cafeyate is a pincipal wine growing region and coloquially known as the "Tuscany" of Argentina". This atmospheric Andean mountain town, cradles high-elevation vineyards that are producing incredible malbec varieties. With a multitude of boutique wine bodegas and the impressive surrounding landscapes, it is hard to not fall in love with <a href="https://vaexpeditions.com/package/argentina-100-wines">Cafayate</a>!&nbsp;

The Jujuy province in the North of Argentina is arid and dry and somewhat reminiscent of the wild west. Although it is the next to Salta, it couldn&acute;t be any more different! Its rugged terrain, its strong indigenous culture and traditional pagan rituals, are a world, if not a galaxy, away from Salta&acute;s Colonial-ness. Purmamarca, Tilcara and Humahuaca, are three unmissable towns in Jujuy and the Cha&ntilde;i mountain on the skyline offers some of the best climbing in all of Argentina.

Salta, Cordoba and Jujuy

This popular touristic destination is a paradise for trekkers, skiers, kayakers, sailors and scuba divers. Ushuaia

The word Bariloche means "people from behind the mountain" in the native language of Mapudungun. The city is Argentinian; however, it is often confused with being Chilean due to its proximity to Santiago in Chile.

This is the national park of <a href="https://vaexpeditions.com/package/luxurious-argentina">Bariloche. </a>It's the perfect place to experience the wilderness filled with stunning lagoons and flora and fauna. This is an incredible place for hiking and for nature lovers, with the dormant volcano of Tronador. There are cabins in the park to camp if you are looking for an overnight camping option in the park.&nbsp;

Nahuel Huapi national park

&nbsp;Punta Tombo is a peninsula on the Atlantic coast and is the home to the famous Magellan penguins and the largest of its kind in the country. The reserve is also the home to a variety of other animal and bird species such as gulls, cormorants, rheas and guanacos! The best time of year to see the penguins is from November to February.&nbsp;

Just north of Bariloche is another small town that&rsquo;s well worth a visit &ndash;<a href="https://vaexpeditions.com/package/boutique-argentina"> Villa La Angostura,</a> high in the mountains and home to the Parque Nacional Los Arrayanes. The park gets its name from the array&aacute;n trees that are endemic near the Argentinian-Chilean border and were important to the native Mapuche people as a source of medicine.&nbsp;

Aconcagua

The wine capital of Argentina is responsible for 70% of&nbsp;<a href="https://vaexpeditions.com/package/argentina-100-wines">Argentine wine</a> production. The limited rainfall in this desert terrain is perfect for the vine, as the glacial water that trickles down from the Andes keeps them hydrated. Do the cycling tour of 12 vineyards, with a strategically situated hotel at the last vineyard, if you are struggling to stay upright after all the wine tasting! Plan to stay there for a while!&nbsp;

The Cuyo combines delectable wine growing regions and the highest mountain in South America.... for some, the perfect combination!

Bolivia is one of the poorest countries in South America and their national health care system is of a generally low quality. There are decent private clinics in la Paz and in Cochabamba, but outside of these cities, health services are limited and basic. Make sure you have a comprehensive travel insurance policy, which covers you for health insurance.&nbsp;
The jungle regions have a wide variety of tropical illnesses and yellow fever is rife. Mosquito-borne illnesses such as malaria, zika and dengue are common also. Visit your local travel clinic before you go! &nbsp;
Water is treated in the bigger cities but not in smaller towns. Salads will be washed, but you should check the water source of what they are washed in! Traveller's diarrhoea is common in Bolivia due to the lower standards of water quality, so take stomach medication with you. Amoebic illnesses are also common with Giardia being common.&nbsp;

The general standard of accommodation for its specific category tends to be good value. Outside of the main cities, options are a lot more limited, so luxury options may be an issue, but there are plenty of budget options abound in most towns and cities. Even the most economical of lodgings with usually have a private bathroom and a hot shower, though the cheaper options may have shared facilities. There are excellent eco-lodges in the jungle, top-end hotels in the bigger cities and even salt hotels in the <a href="https://vaexpeditions.com/package/bolivia-4-day-extension" data-cke-saved-href="https://vaexpeditions.com/package/bolivia-4-day-extension">Salar de Uyuni! </a>On the 3 day Salar tour, there are basic hostels in the national park of Eduardo Avaroa with shared bathrooms and no showers, for example! So accommodations generally depend on the specific area you are visiting.&nbsp;

Bolivianos are the local currency but are called "pesos" by the local people. The Boliviano is linked but not fixed to the US dollar. Notes are quite often taped and look old, but try and keep hold of the better quality bills as that is what most other people will do also! Denominations come in $10, 20 50 100 and 200s.&nbsp;
Dollars are accepted but should be pristine, with no small tears. The best exchange rates can usually be found at the border towns. Offload your bolivianos before you leave as they are hard to change outside of the country.&nbsp;

The high elevations of the <a href="https://vaexpeditions.com/package/huayna-potosi-mountain-climb">Andean mountain range</a>, descend into the steamy tropical jungle regions of the <a href="https://vaexpeditions.com/package/wondersome-bolivia">Amazon. </a>The one thing that Bolivia does not have is a sea border, which was taken from them by Chile during the Atacama border dispute during the war of the Pacific in 1884. Since then, Bolivia has been a landlocked country. Bolivia is a large country geographically but has a relatively low population count with just over 10 million inhabitants. These people can generally be found in the cities such as La Paz, Sucre, Santa Cruz and <a href="https://vaexpeditions.com/package/10-day-multi-destination-bolivia">Potosi</a>. A large part of the country is covered in jungle and is also the home to a wide range of animal species and the biodiversity is even greater due to the geography of the country. Bolivia is renowned as being somewhat politically unstable but has regained a certain amount of stability in recent years under the government of Morales. Bolivia is also "infamous" for its massive cocaine production and exportation. The coca leaf is legally grown in the country and it is suggested that it forms a significant, yet illegal part of the Bolivian economy. Bolivia however remains one of the most exciting places to visit in South America, which its cultural traditions still intact, its stunning mountains,<a href="https://vaexpeditions.com/package/awe-inspiring-bolivia"> Lake Titicaca,</a> The Uyuni <a href="https://vaexpeditions.com/package/4-nights-luxury-uyuni-salt-flats">salt flats</a> and The Amazon jungle. The country is a backpacker's paradise as it is really cheap to travel with lots to see and do.
