Trip Overview

El Chaltén is found in the heart of Patagonia and form part of the Los Glaciers National Park. It is renowned for spectacular trekking and adventure activities and was named Argentina’ Trekking capital. The natural scenery and the glacial backdrops will accompany you on a range of hiking, climbing and adventure activities. The numerous trekking trails receive many visitors every year visiting its lakes, volcanoes and stunning scenery. Situated on the border of The Argentinian and Chilean Andes of Patagonia, this area was disputed between the countries with Argentina winning the rights over the national Park and its spectacular scenery. It is considered one of the best places in the world to visit due to its natural beauty and this itinerary will provide the fullest experience of its natural prowess, spectacular glaciers and astounding hiking trails.

Day by day schedule

Day 1– BUENOS AIRES

On the day that you arrive in the capital, we will head out on a city tour of Buenos Aires. The tour will allow you to experience the beauty and magic of this cultural and cosmopolitan city. The symbolic Obelisk will be our first sight heading to The Plaza de Mayo, the historical and political foundation of the city. We will then visit the Metropolitan Cathedral, the Government house, the Cabildo, and the Municipality. As we head south, we will pass through the bohemian neighbourhood of San Telmo, famous for its tango and its cobbled streets. Further South we will head to La Boca, and the Boca Juniors Stadium, home of the Boca Juniors football club. Afterwards, we will visit ¨Caminito¨ tourist centre, before heading to the old port, where you can appreciate how the city has changed over the years. Afterwards, we will head to Puerto Madero, the most luxurious neighbourhood of Buenos Aires. We will next head onto Palermo, a residential neighbourhood with elegant parks and buildings, such as the San Martiniano Institute and a number of embassies, museums and significant historical monuments. From here we will carry on to the Forests area: The Rose Garden, The Magna Letter Monument and the Four Regions of Argentina and the Av. Del Libertador. We will finish our day at the sophisticated Recoleta neighbourhood, home of the famous cemetery and where the streets are lined with elegant cafes and restaurants.

Day 2 -BUENOS AIRES

Today is our “Gaucho” Day!

We will leave the city and head to the country and as we travel the whole panorama changes. From the metropolis of Buenos Aires, we can now appreciate the stunning plains of the Pampa region. Along the way, our guide will give a full insight into gaucho culture and life in general on the estate. This visit will allow us to reconnect with nature as well as learn about this incredible culture of the Gauchos.

We will enjoy a traditional “Asado” barbecue lunch, including a display of the native folklore and traditions. In the evening, we will head to a dinner and Tango Show at La Ventana.

Today is a travel day. We will head to the domestic airport for our flight to Calafate. On arrival, we will head to our hotel for dinner and a good evenings rest.

Today we will visit the spectacular Moreno Glacier. Even from the set-off, this is a spectacular trip with incredible views over the Argentino Lake and its Redonda Bay. This area is blessed with a wide variety of bird fauna, including the black neck swan, the flamingo, the vapour duck, the coot and the roody headed goose or as it is locally known, “caiquen”.  The eye-catching yellow hues of the surrounding countryside are due to its “coiron” grasslands pastures and among them the white and short “coiron” grasslands

As we enter the National Park we can observe the tree vegetation that is mostly made of the “Nothofagus” family, a few cinnamon trees, and flowers of different colours, among which the bright red  “notro” stands out, due to its intense red colour that contrasts to the Patagonian Andean Forest.

We will then arrive at the “curva de Los suspiros” (“Curve of Sighs”), due to it being the first panoramic viewpoint of the Perito Moreno Glacier. We will then arrive at the” Bajo las Sombras” Port. We will then navigate through the southern section of the Iceberg Channel, to appreciate the different views of the Perito Moreno Glacier wall. Back at the Port, we will head to the system of footbridges which allow you to appreciate the amazing views of the glacier along the different pathways. After lunch and some free time for photo opportunities, we will head back to El Calafate for the evening.

Today we will head off to Chaltén with a stop off at La Leona for a Coffee. You will have a free day to settle into your hotel and enjoy the village.

Day 6 -CHALTEN

After breakfast, we will enjoy a full day trek to The Torre Lake. We will begin with a slight climb through some woods and as we climb in elevation, we will find ourselves alongside the Fitz Roy River. We will continue onto the stunning viewpoint of the river, canyon and the spectacular Margarita waterfall. The view over the valley of the Fitz Roy River is the perfect backdrop, with the impressive Mount Torre in the distance, forming part of the Adela mountain range. After a short rest, we will hike for 2 hours through grand lenga forests, crossing old glacial moraine formations as well as the wet plains formed by the previous river courses, until we arrive at Laguna Torre. In this area, if we are lucky, we can spot the Magellan woodpecker! In Laguna Torre, we can see the huge icebergs, where ice which has fallen off the main Torre glacier. The numerous pathways over the glacial moraine, have many viewpoints, including the Maestri viewpoint. From here, we can see the source of the River Fitz Roy, where we can see the complex system of ropes and pulleys, used by climbers to access the Torre glacier and arrive at its basecamp. Along the hike and especially in spring, we can see a wide variety of wildflowers indigenous to Patagonia. After lunch, we will hike back to El Chaltén.

Today we will once more head along the Fitz Roy footpath. The first viewpoint is at the Valley of the Vueltas. After a gentle climb, we will then arrive at the viewpoint of the Fitz Roy massif for incredible views of the glacier. We will then hike for 2 hours until we reach the Río Blanco campsite, the base camp for climbers who will attempt to climb the Fitz Roy mountain's granite peaks. We will then head uphill for an hour until we arrive at the “Laguna de Los Tres, with majestic views of Fitz Roy, the glacier de Los Tres and its stunning lagoon. From here we circle “Laguna de Los Tres” and head towards the viewpoint of the Laguna Sucia and its glacier for once more spectacular vistas.

After lunch, we will begin the descent to El Chaltén, passing by The Laguna Capri.

Full Day Cagliero Experience

After breakfast we will visit  “Los Huemules Reserve” located 16 km from the village. The trail passes through three fascinating Lengas forests within a private reserve and away from the busy trekking trails. We will enjoy the unusual view of the northern wall of Fitz Roy. We will continue around the Diablo Lagoon through natural terrain until we reach the beginning of the Via Ferrata. As we climb in altitude, the views become more spectacular and after an hour and a half, we will arrive at the Glacier Viewpoint. We will be able to appreciate the unexplored Cagliero Sur Glacier at 950 metres elevation, which is still in existence. From the Mirador, we will arrive at the front of the glacier “Vivac Cagliero” our base armed with domes. Here, we will be fitted with our crampons to start the walk on the glacier itself. The average stay on the glacier is 3 hours, depending on the weather and the group's physical level. In the afternoon we will begin with the descent of the “Via Ferrata” to the Diablo River and on to “Los Huemules Reserve” where our vehicle will be waiting for us to return to the hotel

Today we will travel back to Buenos Aires and will arrive at Calafate airport, in time for your flight.

Day 10 -BUENOS AIRES

After breakfast, we will take you to the airport for your flight back home or on to your next destination!
