San José del Guaviare and the Chiribiquete National Park are located on the border between the Eastern Plains and the Amazon rainforest. With an average temperature of 25ºC, the capital of the department of Guaviare is a destination renowned for its impressive forests, savannas and rivers. You can also encounter strange rock formations in “La Ciudad de la piedra” and Cerro Azul, where ancient indigenous civilizations etched their pictograms on the stones. This natural environment also offers a fly-over the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Chiribiquete National Natural Park. Found in the northwest corner of the Colombian Amazon Basin, between jungle territories of the departments of Caquetá and Guaviare, this area is recognized for its mountainous formations, preservation, and limited human intervention, making it the perfect location for endangered species and research of new unidentified species. You can observe spectacular natural landscapes in this biodiverse paradise and it is considered one of the richest natural areas in the world.

Our meeting point will be the Los heroes Shopping Centre in Bogotá. From here, we will head to the airport for our onward flight to San Jose del Guaviare. Upon arrival, we will head to the National Parks office for a welcome briefing about the Chiribiquete mountain range. After breakfast, we will head out by 4x4 jeep to the impressive Ciudad de Piedra, or “Stone City”. In Ciudad de Piedra, you can make out natural designs resembling rocky streets and avenues that will inspire your imagination. In the Los Tuneles sector, you will see a rocky outcrop with forms and angles that defy the laws of physics. It appears that the rocks form imposing caves and mazes because of their immensity and shape in this unique stone city. We will then return to the hotel for the evening.
Once more we will head out in our 4x4 jeep to The Cerro Azul or “Blue Mountain”. This area is famous for a magnificent mural of cave paintings, dating back to over 1000 years ago. We will then hike for around 30 minutes to appreciate the red pictograms that were painted on the rocks by local indigenous people. Today is our final day that we can spend doing various activities in San Jose del Guaviare and its surrounding area. You may take a walking tour in the city or visit the Guaviare River port to appreciate the spectacular views, amongst many other options. We will then head back to the airport for our return flight to the city of Bogotá and the end of our amazing journey.
