Trip Overview

San José del Guaviare and the Chiribiquete National Park are located on the border between the Eastern Plains and the Amazon rainforest. With an average temperature of 25ºC, the capital of the department of Guaviare is a destination renowned for its impressive forests, savannas and rivers. You can also encounter strange rock formations in “La Ciudad de la piedra” and Cerro Azul, where ancient indigenous civilizations etched their pictograms on the stones. This natural environment also offers a fly-over the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Chiribiquete National Natural Park. Found in the northwest corner of the Colombian Amazon Basin, between jungle territories of the departments of Caquetá and Guaviare, this area is recognized for its mountainous formations, preservation, and limited human intervention, making it the perfect location for endangered species and research of new unidentified species. Our meeting point will be the Los heroes Shopping Centre in Bogotá.  From here, we will head to the airport for our onward flight to San Jose del Guaviare. Upon arrival, we will head to the National Parks office for a welcome briefing about the Chiribiquete mountain range. Now being well-versed about the area, we will embark on our fly-over the Chiribiquete mountain range. The flyover lasts for approximately two hours. From the air, you can appreciate one of the most interesting natural treasures of the region -The Tespuyes or “table-top mountains”. These are one of the oldest geological formations on the planet dating back more than 1.3 billion years ago. These incredible mountains are made of quartzite rocks, sandstones, and granites. They can reach 2,000 metres elevation at their highest point and are characterized by flat surfaces and large vertical walls, giving rise to the famous cliffs. We will then head back to the hotel in San Jose de Guaviare.

Day 2:San José del Guaviare - Ciudad de Piedra

DAY 02 - San José del Guaviare - Ciudad de Piedra

After breakfast, we will head out by 4x4 jeep to the impressive Ciudad de Piedra, or “Stone City”. In Ciudad de Piedra, you can make out natural designs resembling rocky streets and avenues that will inspire your imagination. In the Los Tuneles sector, you will see a rocky outcrop with forms and angles that defy the laws of physics. It appears that the rocks form imposing caves and mazes because of their immensity and shape in this unique stone city. We will then return to the hotel for the evening.

Once more we will head out in our 4x4 jeep to The Cerro Azul or “Blue Mountain”. This area is famous for a magnificent mural of cave paintings, dating back to over 1000 years ago. We will then hike for around 30 minutes to appreciate the red pictograms that were painted on the rocks by local indigenous people. We can witness the archaeological evidence of the pre-Hispanic interactions between the different Amazonian villages and the Orinoquía region. There is evidence to suggest the relationship between these towns and their natural environment was uniquely symbiotic. We will then pass through an open cave and climb until you reach a panoramic viewpoint that looks over the stunning panorama of the jungle. We will then return to San Jose del Guaviare for the evening.

Excellent experience

We have spent 10 days in Peru on a school trip and Valencia Travel was the local partner. We were very pleased with the itinerary and the support from our guides and drivers. We spent several days in Cusco, then went to a local Cacao Farm and after of course Aguas Calientes. Everyone in the group had a great time and our guide Ronaldo tried his best to ensure all needs were met.

Best travel guide and company for our family trip to Machu Picchu

Our family of 5 (2 adults and 3 kids) did the short Inka trail to Machu Picchu and our guide Carlos Caceres was the best! He made our trip to Machu Picchu very special and memorable. He was very experienced, kind, patient and always made sure we were taken care of. The trip went so smoothly because of Carlos. From making sure we got on trains to buses to trail crossings to restaurants in town, he was always on top of it. Highly recommend Valencia Travel Cusco and Carlos as your guide. We were grateful for everything.
