Bogotá

As well as being the capital of Colombia, Bogota is also the undisputed cuisine capital of the country. In recent years, Bogota has revived its culinary prowess as chefs choose to open up new restaurants in the city. Restaurants such as “Leo” and “El Cielo “, have received international acclaim, while more down to earth feeding grounds like the Paloquemao Market and La Puerta Falsa also attract food buffs who are searching for authentic Colombian cuisine, to tantalize the senses.

Cartagena

Cartagena is probably the most well-established foodie city in Colombia, mainly due to the large number of visitors who arrive at this Caribbean city. Cartagena is home to a huge number of world-class restaurants serving everything from top of the range seafood dishes to international gourmet cuisine. The best of the Colombian restaurants include, “La Cevicheria” and “La Mulata”, whereas the authentic local cuisine can be found in abundance at the Bazurto Market.

Popayán

The only Latin American city to have been declared a City of Gastronomy by UNESCO, is Popayán . It´s strong, historic tradition of regional cooking, make it an excellent option to stop off on your travels, if you are looking to enjoy some of Colombia’s most cultural signature dishes. Every year, a National Gastronomy Congress takes place, where typical dishes like carantanta, empanadas and tamales de pipian, and “satay” chilli sauce, are sure to tickle the taste buds of even the most demanding foodie vacationer.

The Eastern Plains

For BBQ lovers, Colombia’s wild Eastern Plains, or “Llanos Orientales”, regions, are home to a vast region of flooded plains, cowboys, and wildlife as you head towards neighbouring Venezuela. Cattle and livestock form an intrinsic aspect of local life in this region and as a result, the llanero people make some incredible top-notch BBQ dishes! A parrilla in the plains is an authentic experience for any foodie but be aware that vegetarian option may well be in short supply!

The Amazon

The Amazon region is the truly “out-there” Colombian destination to visit without a doubt, boasting an astounding number of truly unique dishes, originating from the various Indigenous communities living in the Amazon jungle.  Amazonas, Guainia, Guaviare, Vaupes, Putumayo, and Caqueta are the regions to visit for exquisite and unique Colombian cuisine, which you will not find on many restaurant menus! From the second largest freshwater fish in the world to an extra-ordinary variety of peppers, spices and powders, the Amazon is the region of choice for the ultimate adventurous food-lover.

The Pacific coast

Colombia’s Pacific coastal dishes are mainly influenced by the Afro-Colombian community who live there, combined with the delectable locally caught, fresh seafood. The city of Cali is the perfect place to sample many Pacific dishes, but by far the best way to try these plates is to head to the coastal towns. Bahia Solano, Nuqui, or Tumaco are superb options for enjoying a number of exquisite, regional cuisines of the Pacific coast.

Santander region

The Andean region of Santander has a truly unique food culture within Colombia and there are a number of delicious dishes.  that you can only find in this region to try on your visit. Standout dishes include baby goat (awwwwww!)  and “carne oreada”, which is similar to beef jerky.
