Guatemala is blessed with volcanos, thick with cloud cover and ready to be climbed. Rural towns and villages are alive with chaotic but thrilling street markets, home to locals who dress in brightly colored clothing whose patterns testify to the identity of their home towns. The famous chicken buses roar through the streets of colonial Antigua Guatemala. Crumbling Maya ruins dating over 1,400 years old were retrieved from the encroaching jungle. Belize with is equally pristine rainforest and exquisitely stunning coastline and waters as well as impressive archaeological sites, is the best way to finish this 2-week vacation, where you will visit the highlights of both of these Mayan countries. Find out more on this Guatemala and Belize highlights Tour.

Tikal

Antigua

Agua Volcano is the spectacular backdrop for the old town and the bright yellow Santa Catalina Arch, Antigua has to be up there as one of the most spectacular cities in Central America. Start your trip by spending a few days wandering the cobblestone streets before heading out to explore the spectacular surrounding scenery.

Pacay Volcano

One of the best volcanos to climb in Guatemala is Pacaya Volcano, which is within easy reach from Antigua Guatemala. Head out in the afternoon, so that you can reach the highest point at around sunset time and you’ll be able to enjoy a show of smoke and explosions before heading back down, in the dark, using only a torch for light. This is one of the few volcanos that you can toast marshmallows on for that extra sugar kick on the climb!

Chichicastenango

Chichicastenango offers incredible insight into Guatemala’s indigenous heritage and the age-old Mayan belief systems that have fused with the Catholicism imposed by Spanish colonizers. The result is a unique blend in which European religious traditions mix with ancient mysticism and shamanism. On Thursdays and Sundays, the streets come alive with a whirl of color as Chichicastenango plays host to Guatemala’s largest open-air market. Indigenous communities from across the region congregate in spectacular traditional dress to sell their produce and traditional handicrafts, textiles masks, and trinkets.

Lake Atitlan

This stunning lake is located about 2.5 hours west of Antigua, and it’s well worth a stop on your Guatemala itinerary. You will definitely be captivated by Lake Atitlan. The lake was formed out of a massive volcanic crater and is the deepest lake in Central America. The clear blue water is surrounded by beautiful volcanos and mountains. There are eleven towns around the lake, each with its own personality. Mayan culture is very prevalent at Lake Atitlan, from the bright traditional clothing the women wear to the colorful weaving and handicrafts sold in the streets and head out onto this magnificent stretch of water in the Guatemalan mountains.

Iximche

Iximche is a small Mayan archaeological site that can be found in the western highlands of Guatemala, about two hours away from Guatemala City. This is a tiny and not very popular place that hides a lot of importance for the history of modern Central America and especially for Guatemala.

Tikal

The Tikal archaeological site is huge. One of the most important pre-Colombian Maya sites in Guatemala Tikal is the country’s most famous tourist attraction. The massive Maya city is still largely unexplored because of the dense Petén jungle that still surrounds it. But the structures that have been excavated and restored are simply amazing. There is a reason why so many people visit! Get your Indiana Jones hat ready for this one!

ATM

Located near San Ignacio, the Actun Tunichil Muknal or ATM for short is an ancient sacrificial burial site of the Mayas, found inside a sprawling cave system. Once you complete your trek through the jungle and swim through the cave entrance, you will find ancient pottery, ceramics, and stoneware, as well as the remains of human sacrifices, including The ‘Crystal Maiden,’ the unfortunate highlight of the visit, who is a female skeleton of an adolescent covered entirely in limestone crystals.

Jaguar Paw

Jaguar Paw is a pristine natural area located near Belmopan in central Belize. The Jaguar Paw area contains a section of rainforest as well as a deep cave with an underground creek running through it. This natural geography is perfect for cave tubing- a uniquely Belizean activity that refers to floating on inflatable inner tubes. and ziplining through the tree canopy for a bird’s eye view of the plants and animals that call the canopy home.

Ambergris Caye

Ambergris Caye, is the largest island off Belize’s coastline, stretching along the Belize Barrier Reef all the way to the Yucatan peninsula, in Mexico. The island's biggest town is San Pedro, a busy village home to the majority of the Ambergris' restaurants, bars, stores, and hotels. Other hotels and resorts claim their space along the northern coast and even the most luxurious manage to maintain their laid-back and relaxed Belizean flair. Like other Belizean cayes, Ambergris Caye is a fantastic destination for water sports, especially snorkeling and Scuba diving, with access to the second-largest barrier reef in the world.

Hol Chan

Hol Chan is one of the best snorkeling destinations in Belize. Hol Chan means ‘little channel’ in the Maya language and as such, it has always been a natural hangout for marine life.  It was identified as an abundant area for marine life which is why it was declared a reserve. The Hol Chan reserve covers about 10 square km and is close to Ambergris Caye. No fishing is permitted in the reserve, which is why it is rich with sea life of every type. Snorkelers can expect to see abundant angelfish, blue-stripped grunts, schoolmaster snappers, and many other species. It is also known for the green moray eels living in tiny caves along the wall.
