Mesoamerican Reef, Quintana Roo

The reef system measures 62 miles and covers the four countries of Mexico, Belize, Honduras, and Guatemala and is the second-largest barrier reef in the world after the Great Barrier Reef. It’s a wonderful place for diving, especially in the Mexican Riviera Maya, which forms part of four national parks and two biosphere reserves on Mexico’s Caribbean coast. There are many opportunities for diving at different depths in the Puerto Morelos Reef National Park. there is the Cozumel National Park, the Isla Contoy National Park, and the West Coast National Park of Isla Mujeres, Punta Cancun, and Punta  Nizuc, as well as in the reserves of Banco Chinchorro and Sian Ka’an. A remarkable number of beautiful sea-life specimens parade before divers’ eyes, including several species of turtles at risk of extinction, different species of brightly colored fish, manatees, sharks, and a wide variety of corals. All this makes diving through these reefs one of the most beautiful experiences of adventure tourism in Mexico.

Cave Diving in The Yucatan

Cave diving isn’t for the faint-hearted, weak swimmers, or anyone who gets claustrophobic. However, if you can get past the idea of being sandwiched between solid rock and water, then you are in for a treat. Freshwater cave diving in Mexico is like no other kind of diving; you enter a vast hidden world. The Yucatán Peninsula is popular for its cenotes (large holes with their own cave systems), crystal-clear water, and ancient stalactites.

Kite Surfing in Baja California

Known as the kitesurfing destination in Mexico, La Ventana is a simple fishing village. Yet it is its strong, steady thermal winds that make it the perfect spot for kitesurfing. The ambiance is mellow, the Sea of Cortez is a stunning blue and the lifestyle is cheap. A lot of kitesurfers spend their winters here, just enjoying the waves, the atmosphere, and the laid-back lifestyle. This is the perfect trip for a bit of an adrenaline rush and some downtime, too.

Hot Air Balooning at Teotihuacan

The Pyramid of the Sun and the Moon as you’ve never seen them before. This trip through the skies above Teotihuacan at sunrise is worth dragging yourself out of bed for. Most tourists to Mexico City make the 30-minute drive to this 1,800-year-old archaeological site, but how many can say they’ve flown above it in a hot air balloon?

Hike a Strato-volcano near Mexico City

Just 50 miles west of Mexico City, the 15,350-foot summit of Nevado de Toluca is often covered in snow, and the hike up can be…intense. However, your effort is rewarded at every step with views of the surrounding mountain peaks (some of Mexico’s tallest) and the valley lakes far below.
