Trip Overview
The Copper Canyon Railway is one of the world’s most incredible rail journeys, and northern Mexico's biggest attraction, the luxury El Chepe Express, and the slow, bare-bones Chepe Regional, are the trains that run along this incredible feat of engineering Completed in 1961, the railway is as phenomenal in its engineering prowess as in the canyon views it offers. While there are incredible views the full length of the railroad route, the majority of the spectacular and dramatic scenery is on the Los Mochis part of the journey, at the beginning of this tour. Day by day schedule
Day 01 - Arrival in El Fuerte
On arrival to Los Mochis Airport, our guide will be waiting to take you to the historic lodge. You can relax for the rest of the day or head out to explore this quaint and picturesque town.
Day 02 - Board “El Chepe”,- Chihuahua al Pacifico train
After breakfast, we will head to the El Fuerte railway station on to Posada Barrancas, where you will board the world-famous Chihuahua al Pacifico “El Chepe” train for a stunning ride into the Sierra Madre Mountains. In your First-Class carriage, you will enjoy exceptional service whilst appreciating the awe-inspiring views over these impressive mountains.
Day 03 - Visit the Barrancas de Oteros View and Fertility Rock
We will start the day with an invigorating walk to a lookout point over the Otero Canyon. We will then explore a Tarahumara cave house before visiting the local ‘fertility rock’, revered for its life-giving properties.
Day 04 - Creel
Back on El Chepe Express, we will travel the Copper Canyon railway to Creel, the frontier logging and mining town which is now a tourism centre. In the evening, we will settle into our suites at the luxury hotel in Creel, located in the heart of the Sierra Tarahumara.
Day 05 - Batopilas Canyon
Today is the day we descend the switchbacks into the depths of the Batopilas Canyon, passing through the Copper and La Bufa canyons. Arriving at Batopilas, we will arrive at the hotel which looks out over the Batopilas River. The town boasts ruins of the Sheppard Hacienda and incredible colonial architecture. You can also enjoy a beer with the locals at the Swinging Bridge Bar. In the evening, enjoy the delights of the Riverside Lodge, which is surrounded by cliffs and cactus-studded hillsides.
Day 06 - Explore Batopilas
Enjoy a full day in the picturesque town of Batopilas. Soak up the history, laze by the river, choose from a number of day hikes, or take a trip to visit the Lost Cathedral of Satevo. We will then return to our lodge for dinner and a good nights rest.
Day 07 - Journey from Batopilas to Creel
After an early breakfast, we will climb out of the Batopilas Canyon on the stunning journey back to Creel. You will have a free afternoon to relax or to explore the town.
You may choose to visit the local crafts cooperative or visit the nearby hot springs. There is plenty to do here!
Day 08 - Creel - Chihuahua
Today, we will head to Chihuahua. The afternoon is free for relaxing and visiting the interesting museums and historical sights of this important city.
Day 09 – Chihuahua – Mexico City
Today, we will leave the Chihuahua hotel to head to the airport for the onward flight to Mexico City. We will be taken to the luxury hotel in the city.
Day 10 - Mexico City
Today we will enjoy this cosmopolitan city, including Xochimilco and trajinera, Casa Azul - Frida Kahlo, Zocalo, Palacio Nacional, the cathedral, Palacio de Bellas Artes, Reforma and Chapultepec.
Day 11 – Mexico City
Today is a Free day to explore the city.
Day 12 - Mexico City - Home
We will take you to the airport for your departing flight home or onto your next exciting destination!
