Overview of Luxury

South America helped define the modern idea of an "exploration lodge" a small, remote property where a personal guide builds each day's excursions around you rather than a fixed departure schedule. The form varies by region: an all inclusive desert lodge in the Atacama with a guide assigned to each guest, a Torres del Paine hotel recognized among the region's top-rated properties, a small Galápagos yacht capped at a handful of cabins under national park rules or a boutique hotel set among Inca agricultural terraces. What makes these places feel luxurious is not only the rate. It is the small number of guests at any one time, which is what makes the access and attention possible.

VA Expeditions builds these journeys as part of a wider South America route whenever it makes sense, a Patagonia focused trip can extend to the Atacama's stargazing lodges or the Galápagos and a Peru itinerary often adds a few nights in the Amazon. Designed by a US-based travel team with direct access to experienced local specialists and operators across South America, each route is planned around altitude, lodge availability and travel time between regions, so the trip reads as one continuous journey rather than a series of separate hotel stays.

Luxury here means specific, verifiable things: accommodation at a premium tier, a personal guide-to-guest ratio built into land itineraries, one point of contact coordinating logistics across countries, and destination specialists who've worked these routes directly — not just a higher price tag. This page covers what luxury travel looks like across South America as a whole — if you already know which country you want, the destination pages below go deeper on each one.

Everything you need to know before visiting Luxury: local customs, safety guidelines, currency, health advice, and practical tips.

Where Luxury Travel Happens Best

  • Patagonia (Chile & Argentina) — Home to several distinct all-inclusive exploration lodges, all within reach of Torres del Paine, spanning both the Chilean and Argentine sides of the region.
  • Atacama Desert (Chile) — Among the driest places on Earth, with some of the clearest night skies anywhere several lodges have their own telescopes and stargazing guides.
  • Galápagos Islands (Ecuador) — National park rules cap vessel size so the small ship experience often well under 100 passengers is part of what defines luxury here.
  • Sacred Valley & Cusco, Peru — Boutique hotels set among Inca agricultural terraces within easy reach of Machu Picchu.
  • Peruvian & Ecuadorian Amazon — Riverside lodges reachable only by boat which is built for travelers who want to be close to the rainforest's wildlife, not just see it from a distance.
  • Mendoza & Buenos Aires (Argentina) — Wine country lodges in Mendoza paired with design hotels in Buenos Aires for travelers who want both nature and city.
  • Cartagena & the Coffee Region (Colombia) — Colonial luxury hotels inside Cartagena's walled city, paired with boutique coffee-hacienda stays in the Zona Cafetera for a slower, greener contrast.
  • The Amazon & Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) — Private jungle lodges deep in the Brazilian Amazon combined with design hotels overlooking Rio's beaches, for travelers who want rainforest and city in one trip.

Why Book Your Luxury South America Tour With VA Expeditions

Built Around Your Dates, Not a Fixed Calendar: Every itinerary starts from your travel dates and interests rather than a set departure schedule. Upgrading to a private room or rebalancing time between Patagonia and the Atacama is a routine adjustment, not a special request.

US-Based Support, Experienced Local Specialists: Designed by a US based travel team with direct access to experienced local specialists and operators across South America, so recommendations on lodges, timing and routing come from people who work with these properties directly.

Multi Country Routing Done Right: Because many of South America's best luxury lodges sit in different countries, itineraries can combine Chile, Argentina, Peru and Ecuador into one coordinated route arranged through a single point of contact rather than separate bookings.

Private by Design: Itineraries are built around who is actually traveling not a shared group calendar. Whether it is a stargazing focused trip to the Atacama or a slower paced journey for a multigenerational family, the pace and accommodations adjust to your group specifically.

Top Luxury Experiences in South America

  1. Watch the stars at a lodge in the Atacama Desert. Several lodges here have their own telescopes and stargazing guides, taking advantage of some of the clearest night skies anywhere. Insider tip: the best time to go is on a new moon.
  2. Spend a night at a hotel with panoramic views of Torres del Paine — several properties in the region hold recognized international ratings. Insider tip: ask about low season rates, the view is the same, the crowds are smaller.
  3. Hire a guide and a jeep for your stay. Some Atacama and Patagonia lodges offer a personal guide and vehicle for each room for a custom daily plan.. Insider tip: make it clear from day one about the pace you want to have.
  4. Take a cruise to Galapagos Islands on a small ship. The National Park authorities allow only small cruise ships with up to 100 people and only one guide for 16 tourists. Insider tip: if you want to travel on the most exclusive yachts make your reservation not less than 6 months ahead.
  5. Base yourself in the Sacred Valley rather than Cusco. Chic lodgings nestled in their Inca terracing are found at a lower altitude than Cusco, assuring an easier acclimatization before heading to Machu Picchu. Insider tip: it is best to spend about two or three days in the Sacred Valley before undertaking anything strenuous.
  6. Follow pumas in the private Patagonia reserve. Some hotels offer a puma monitoring service in the private land of conservation that borders Torres del Paine National Park. Insider tip: dawn and dusk are the most advantageous times for seeking pumas.
  7. Eat where Peru's culinary reputation was built. Lima’s Maido is titled the World’s Best Restaurant of 2025, while the city itself will host the World’s 50 Best restaurants ceremony in November 2026. Insider tip: this is the time to book a table at the tasting menu restaurants for weeks ahead.
  8. Stay in a riverside Amazon lodge. Luxurious Amazon lodges combine private guiding with proximity to some of the world's most biodiverse rainforest. Insider tip: three nights or more gives a noticeably better experience than a single overnight.

Best Time for a Luxury South America Trip

Luxury travelers are increasingly building trips around personal timing rather than a fixed calendar, favoring longer stays in fewer places over a fast multi-region itinerary.

  • Patagonia (Chile & Argentina): Southern Hemisphere summer, November through March, is when most lodges are fully open and trails are clearest, book 6+ months ahead for peak December–February dates.
  • The Atacama Desert: Skies are clear nearly year round, but the driest, coolest nights for stargazing generally run June through August.
  • The Galápagos: The warmer season (December to May) brings calmer seas and easier snorkeling; the cooler season (June to November) brings rougher water but richer marine life, including hammerheads and whale sharks.
  • Peru's Sacred Valley & Cusco: Dry season runs May through September, with June through August as the busiest and most expensive stretch worth booking well ahead if your trip falls in that window.
  • Mendoza (Argentina wine region): March and April bring the grape harvest and its festivals, layering extra events onto an already strong wine tourism season.

Planning a multi region trip? The shoulder seasons: April to May and September to October tend to offer comfortable weather across several regions at once, without the peak season crowds or prices.

Extend Your Journey

You can continue your journey from South America’s most luxurious accommodation options and choose some non standard additions.

  • Antarctica - from the southern point of Patagonia.
  • Easter Island (Chile) - it is a short flight from the Chilean mainland to Easter Island, making it a great destination to combine with Atacama or Patagonia experiences.
  • Peruvian Amazon - a riverside stay complements your travels in Cusco and Machu Picchu.
  • Multiple Destinations - Luxury itineraries covering three or more Latin American countries in a single trip.

How Tailor-Made Luxury Travel Works

  1. You specify your travel dates and interests such as wildlife safari, wine tour, celebratory trips, family friendly adventures, etc.
  2. We create your travel itinerary keeping in mind number of rooms available at the lodges, flights between the destination countries, etc.
  3. Next, we enhance your travel plan by adjusting details like the travel pace, choosing exclusive rooms instead of shared ones and adding a destination country.
  4. Once the plan is agreed upon, you start your travels while we remain at your disposal in case of any questions, problems, etc.

Luxury Peru

The high-end places to stay in Peru are mostly located in Sacred Valley, which is situated on lower elevation than Cusco. Hence, people can easily become accustomed to the atmosphere and rain when they visit Machu Picchu. Here, the rooms are frequently complemented with a private driver and guide during their stay. Most of the luxurious travel programs are about ten-twelve days and involve multiple nights spent in Sacred Valley and an extended stay at Machu Picchu.

Luxury Galapagos & Ecuador

In order to limit the maximum size of the vessels navigating the Galapagos, the authorities of Ecuador established restrictions, due to which the exclusive yachts never carry more than one hundred passengers on board. In addition, the service provided by the crew is of superb quality, as there is a service for sixteen passengers on board. Most of the women book such yachts long before the travel season starts, as the maximum number of passengers is limited, and the most demanded ships are often booked six months in advance. The vessels usually operate for five-eight days in the region, depending on the conditions, as there are two climatic seasons on the islands.

Luxury Patagonia

The luxurious lodges of Patagonia revolve around exploration and not time constraints, with the option of enjoying different excursions daily. There are different properties situated on the Chilean side of Torres del Paine National Park. Summer in the Southern Hemisphere lasts from November to March, when all trails are clear and most of the lodges are available. The peak period lasts from December until February; thus, people can book their lodges six months in advance.

Luxury Colombia

Colombian luxury travel encompasses two types of luxurious travel destinations: colonial hotels in Cartagena, located inside the old city, and boutique hotels in Zona Cafetera, where coffee is grown in the highlands of Colombia. Since colonial architecture is located on the coast, while coffee-producing estates are situated in the highlands, the itinerary in Colombia can be shorter than that of other places in the continent.

Luxury Brazil

Brazil's luxury lodges span two very different environments — private jungle stays deep in the Amazon and design hotels along Rio de Janeiro's coastline — giving travelers rainforest and city within one itinerary. Longer stays are common here given the distances involved, with immersive trips often extending toward two to three weeks to also take in the Pantanal's wildlife-dense wetlands.

Thank you Jorge Ochoa and Valencia Travel

We booked for the 4 day Inca Trail hike but unfortunately fell ill on the flight over. The care and consideration provided to us by our tour guide, Jorge Ochoa, and his colleagues at Valencia Travel when it became clear we weren’t well enough to do the hike was next level, and something we didn’t expect. Jorge arranged alternate accommodation, transfers and transport for us so we could meet our hiking group when they arrived at Machu Picchu and spend the remaining days of the tour with them. We are so grateful for this. Highly recommend Jorge and Valencia Travel.

Wonderful

Amazing Peru! We had Ruben as our tour guide and he made the experience for us such a wonderful one! He guided us through Lima, Amazon Jungle, Cusco, Machu Picchu, Lake Titicaca and also an optional Mara’s and Moray tour. His knowledge of Peruvian history and of the sites he took us to was informative and relevant. His exceptionally caring demeanour towards our group and his great sense of humour and high energy made the 13 days together seeing Peru a pleasure for me. The tour was well organised, transport terrific and Ruben’s problem solving attributes perfect. Thanks so much Ruben, hope we meet again. My first Tripadeal and group tour and would consider again in the future 😊

Amazing Experience

Our 12 day adventure in Peru was part of a 31 day Trip A Deal Tour(Ultimate South America Adventure). We were lucky enough to have Ruben as our guide for the whole 12 days. Not only was he super organised and very knowledgeable, but his sense of humour was a good fit for the 19 Aussies and New Zealanders in our tour group, which made everything so much fun. Ruben cared about everyone in the group and went out of his way to help with any issues and problems and he also tried his best to accommodate any suggestions and requests along the way. Ruben's instructions were always clear and for the whole 12 days in Peru I felt completely safe and comfortable about timing and the itinerary. A brilliant experience and loved every minute. Thanks Ruben and Valencia.

Willington C - Valencia Travel - Best Peru Tour Guide

I can’t recommend Willington highly enough for our experience. Willington was so knowledgeable throughout our Peru leg of the tour that it made the journey so pleasurable. Willington had such diverse knowledge and spoke with clear and precise language. Willington knew the landscape, the history and also demonstrated insight into the local animals which for me was so exciting. Willington provided advice for tipping, coordinated all of our tickets including checking in for flights and assisted with gaining accessthrough quicker lines for experiences. As with all your groups, there are difficult people to deal with that can easily derail the experience. Willington showed highly quality problem solving and conflict resolution skills to resolve a couple’s daily complaints about nothing and this other families unrealistic dietary requirements in the rural parts of Peru. Willington also had a close relationship with the locals throughout Peru aiding in our experience, assisting with travels and gaining deeper observations of the beautiful country. Our only other feedback would be that we wished we had Willington for the rest our trip across South America.

One region trip (i.e. all about Patagonia or only Peru) can be completed in 7 to 10 days. To visit two regions (i.e. Patagonia and Atacama together) takes a minimum of 12 days due to flight connections, etc.

This depends on the area: Patagonia is considered to be at its finest from November to March for the Atacama region June to August is the best time for stargazing and the dry period in Peru is from May to September. For more details on regional specifics, see the Best Time part above.

Safety varies by country and region. Your specialist provides destination-specific guidance for wherever your itinerary includes, current as of trip planning.

For peak dates, Patagonia's December to February season or Galápagos small ship departures 6 or more months ahead is safest, since the smallest, most sought after lodges and yachts sell out first.

Most other exploration lodges offer accommodation with all meals and excursions included. Some lodges include a personal guide as well as a transport car that will be assigned to you during your stay.

It depends on the regulations of your target country that may change constantly, so we check the current regulations for every country included in your itinerary as a part of travel planning.

Yes, this is a very popular way of completing this vacation type. The countries mentioned in Patagonia can be visited by you along with some locations in Argentina and Atacama or Galápagos.

Yes, pacing and accommodation level are built around who's actually traveling. Private guide lodges in particular work well for mixed age groups since each room sets its own daily pace rather than following a shared schedule.
