Day 01 - Arrival to Puerto Montt - Ancud - Piñihuil National Park- Castro

Today is arrival day, please plan to arrive before 9 am. Our guide will be waiting to collect you from the airport to take you South to the Chacao Channel to board the ferry that will take us across to Chiloe Island. Our first stop on the island will be Ancud. Ancud was once a rather wealthy city with elegant buildings, “palafitos” (stilt houses) and a railway line, however, the earthquake of 1960 decimated the town.  Today, this quaint, city is spattered with a few original buildings, leading down to the spectacular waterfront. There are a number of bike paths, a pedestrian pier, multiple plazas, and a spectacular coastline with excellent seafood. We will visit the Natural Monument of Puñihuil, which is the only place in the world to see the Humboldt and Magellan penguins nesting together. You can sail to the islets where penguins nest sharing their natural habitat with cormorants, wild geese and other bird species. We will then head south to Castro. For the evening.  Between March and September, when there are no penguins, we will visit the Lacuy peninsula, Spanish forts, and beaches to enjoy some bird watching.

Today we will experience all that Chiloe’s cultural, agricultural and religious heritage has to offer, by visiting the villages of Dalcahue, Curaco de Veléz and Achao. We can appreciate World Heritage churches, small yet interesting museums, artisans crafts and delicious cuisine. As we explore the back roads, it will soon become apparent why Chiloé was recognised as a World Agricultural Heritage site. The area is characterised by the work of generations of farmers who developed innovative practices for the use and conservation of their natural resources. An example is the cultivation of more than 200 varieties of native potatoes. Finally, depending on the time of year, we will head to the viewpoints, where we can see many bird species, both endemic and migratory species include the straight-billed curlew and the Chilean flamingo.

Today, we will experience the spectacular landscape of Chiloe, where Charles Darwin himself was amazed by the lakes Huillinco, Cucao and the Pacific Ocean. We will then head to the city of Chonchi, known as the "City of Three-floors" due to its different elevations and the home of a World Heritage Church, the Museum of Traditions, the waterfront and crafts market. We will continue to the town of Huillinco where you will see the traditional houses, characteristic of Chiloe. The visit to Chiloé’s National Park offers the option to see the Visitors Centre, with a nice walk along the path of "The Tepual". Here you can see the typical Larch forests of Chiloe and where you can have incredible views over the Pacific Ocean and walk along the beach. In the afternoon, we will head back to the hotel in Castro.

Excellent experience

We have spent 10 days in Peru on a school trip and Valencia Travel was the local partner. We were very pleased with the itinerary and the support from our guides and drivers. We spent several days in Cusco, then went to a local Cacao Farm and after of course Aguas Calientes. Everyone in the group had a great time and our guide Ronaldo tried his best to ensure all needs were met.

Best travel guide and company for our family trip to Machu Picchu

Our family of 5 (2 adults and 3 kids) did the short Inka trail to Machu Picchu and our guide Carlos Caceres was the best! He made our trip to Machu Picchu very special and memorable. He was very experienced, kind, patient and always made sure we were taken care of. The trip went so smoothly because of Carlos. From making sure we got on trains to buses to trail crossings to restaurants in town, he was always on top of it. Highly recommend Valencia Travel Cusco and Carlos as your guide. We were grateful for everything.
