Day 02 - Oxtankah - Manatee Sancturary - Chetumal

After breakfast, we will head to the archaeological site of Oxtankah, meaning “in the middle of three towns". It is one of the most important pre-Hispanic cities to be discovered in the bay of Chetumal. The first Mayan groups settled in Oxtankah around 600 BC. And inhabited the site until approximately 1100 A.D.  The settlement’s central area comprised at least ten squares and two sunken courtyards surrounded by buildings, more than thirty isolated structures, and a cenote. The dominant architectural design is that of the Petén, with sloping walls, rounded corners, supplying themselves with fresh water. They also built wells to collect rainwater. Sailing was an everyday activity, so they travelled the region's channels in canoes and crossed the Chetumal Bay to traverse the Caribbean Sea from north to south.

Afterwards, we will head to Laguna Guerrero to visit the Manatee Sanctuary and try to spot the elusive and shy manatee. We will also visit museums and art galleries in Chetumal before we return to the hotel in Bacalar.

Day 03 - Rio Bec

Today you will enjoy a visit to the Rio Bec pyramids. These pyramids are near the border with the Guatemalan Petén and are characterized by a unique style called the Río Bec Style.

The main structure has two towers with no apparent functionality. These twin towers become narrower as they ascend into the air, giving the impression of greater height. They contain staircases to provide access to the temple itself, which is located above them. The temples, located on the higher platform, also have no real function and were built as solid masses, without interior rooms. Despite these non-functional components, the towers, the temples and altars that crown them have a similar appearance to the towers found in Tikal. In the afternoon, we will return to the hotel in Bacalar

During this period, the Temple of the Masks was erected and is decorated with eight figures, painted in red and black on masonry frames, of which only five remain today. They represent real characters dressed with attributes related to the sun.

We will then visit The Dzibanche Kinichná complex is located in the low jungle, north of the Yucatan Peninsula and the tropical rain forest of Petén. The settlement is made up of four monumental architectural groups: Dzibanché or Grupo Principal, Central Complex or Grupo Lamay, Tutil, and Kinichná.

Excellent experience

We have spent 10 days in Peru on a school trip and Valencia Travel was the local partner. We were very pleased with the itinerary and the support from our guides and drivers. We spent several days in Cusco, then went to a local Cacao Farm and after of course Aguas Calientes. Everyone in the group had a great time and our guide Ronaldo tried his best to ensure all needs were met.

Best travel guide and company for our family trip to Machu Picchu

Our family of 5 (2 adults and 3 kids) did the short Inka trail to Machu Picchu and our guide Carlos Caceres was the best! He made our trip to Machu Picchu very special and memorable. He was very experienced, kind, patient and always made sure we were taken care of. The trip went so smoothly because of Carlos. From making sure we got on trains to buses to trail crossings to restaurants in town, he was always on top of it. Highly recommend Valencia Travel Cusco and Carlos as your guide. We were grateful for everything.
