Birdwatching Tour in Costa Rica

Costa Rica is blessed with a magnificent array of flora and fauna, making it one of the most biodiverse places on the planet. The pristine, well-kept national parks are home to many incredible and exotic wildlife and plant species. Our rainforest excursions in Costa Rica and cloud forests offer us privileged opportunities to see abundant wildlife in general and the variety of bird species in the National Parks is astonishing. The resplendent quetzal is just one of the bird species among the native birds that call Costa Rica home. DAY BY DAY SCHEDULE

After your arrival at Juan Santamaria International Airport, our staff members will be waiting for you, and escort you to the hotel in San Jose.     After breakfast, we will head out to the Palo Verde National Park area located close to the Gulf of Nicoya. This is the perfect place for birdwatchers, naturalists, wildlife lovers and nature-lovers as a whole, due to the incredible biodiversity found within the park. The dichotomy of its spectacular wetlands and tropical dry forests is unique on the planet.  On arrival, we will settle into the hotel and prepare for the following day.  

      Today after breakfast, we will head out on a boat trip to spot some of the birds native to this incredible national park. This park is the natural habitat of Scarlet Macaws, White Ibis, Roseate Spoonbills, Great Curassows, Jabirus and Storks amongst many other bird species, making it a real ornithologists delight.

        Today we will head out to the town of Bijagua. This is the perfect launching spot for the Tenorio Volcano National Park.  We will leave our belongings at the hotel and prepare for today's hike to the Celeste River. This spectacular hike through the jungle will take up close to the vents of the Tenorio volcano, which exude gases of extremely high temperatures. We will then head back to Bijagua for lunch and a relaxing afternoon to enjoy the hotel and the town.

          After breakfast, we will leave Bijagua passing through San Carlos's lowlands to the Sarapiquí area located on the Caribbean lowlands. This area is characterized by lush green rainforest, coffee and banana plantations, and dramatic Poas volcano forms part of this tropical area's dramatic scenery. We will head to the hotel and settle in for the next days’ activities.

            Today we will wake up early to head out on a bird-watching expedition in the La Selva Biological Station. The park has an excellent system of trails to experience the area, with the aim being to see as many birds as possible. The local, knowledgeable nature guides, will take us through a number of different habitats, from dense primary rain forest to open pasturelands.               Today, we will leave Sarapique and head to the town of San Gerardo de Dota. This town is renowned for its bird watching, hiking, fishing and chilling out in a natural environment. The Quetzal is just one of the inhabitants of the area and there are many bird species found in the nearby Los Quetzales National Park.

                Today we will head out after breakfast to the savegre Lodge where we will spend the evening.  We will head out on a birding tour where we can appreciate the incredible choir of the native birds, which is the perfect introduction to this section of cloud forest. We will have a free afternoon to relax and enjoy the hotel's forest grounds and its impressive services.

                  Early in the morning, we will head out to the Central Pacific Coast and to the Carara Transitional Forest National Park. Along the way, we will head out on a hike to Tárcoles to do some bird spotting in the Carara National Park. We can appreciate many bird and animal species including parrots, partridges, toucans, flycatchers, white-faced monkeys and coatis in this area.                     We will wake up early to appreciate the Carara National Park to the full and to see the impressive tropical birds in their natural habitat, enjoying their unique morning song.  In the afternoon we will return to the city of San Jose, where we will spend the evening.  

                      Today is our final day of the tour of the Tropical Birdsong Magic tour. Depending on your flight departure time, our driver will collect you from the hotel and take you to the airport for your flight back home or on to your next exciting destination!

Pharmacies and drugstores are common in all cities, however, it is not certain that you will be able to find a specific drug that you can find in your country of origin.

                        As in any city in the world, there can be pickpockets in crowded places. We suggest being vigilant at all times, but if you are in a group you will always be safer.

                        Yes, hotels will charge the cost of a double room as standard, so a single supplement will be charged if you are traveling alone.

                        Yes, in addition to multi-day programs, we offer half-day experiences and excursions without overnight, which you can purchase as additional services.                         Yes, you can travel with children and we have many activities to do as a family, however, depending on your itinerary, some experiences can be a bit demanding for young children. As a recommendation, we suggest that you ask your sales consultant if the tour you wish to book is suitable for children.

                        We work with a maximum group size of 12 passengers for sustainability reasons and a more personaized experience.

                        We suggest making your reservations at least one month before your trip in order to reserve the best hotels, transportation and services for your travel dates, however, in last minute cases, we can reserve up to 15 days in advance.

                        The official currency in Costa Rica is the Costa Rican colón (CRC). In large cities there is a good chance that you will find ATMs or ATMs, however, we suggest that you do not rely entirely on this solution, as it may not be enabled to work with your bank.

                        Tips are not included in the cost of the tour. You should plan to tip 10% in restaurants and for your guided services, however, tipping is never required.

                        Cultural norms vary within each Latin American country, even within each city within the country, however, we recommend the following measures to have a pleasant visit in each destination: Latin American culture in general tends to be closer and more informal than in others cultures, so there is usually always a friendly approach in all conversations, and going directly to the point could be considered offensive to some people. Personal space can be much shorter as well, but without being interpreted as sexual in nature. 

                        The schedules are also usually more relaxed and informal, however, this is not the case of VA EXPEDITIONS, since we will always respect the hours indicated in your itinerary. This may be different for other appointments that you can book on your own at other locations.

                        For city tours, there are public bathrooms available, in remote destinations bathroom facilities are more sparse.

                        In the mountains and remote places there is no Internet connection. Hotels and public places usually have WIFI available.

                        In cities and tourist centers you will have good telephone reception. In remote areas, there may be no cell phone reception.

                        We suggest that you bring a refillable water bottle or purchase bottled water if necessary. Depending on your destination, at various points on your trip there will be places where you can fill your water bottle.
