When is the best time to visit Belize? 

The best time to visit Belize is during the dry season, which runs from December to April. Temperatures are cooler, and rainfall is decreased; though it is not unusual to have rain, it just tends to fall in shorter spurts. Temperatures annually range from 10-35°c. The driest months are February and March, and temperatures peak in April and May. The mountains are cooler than the rest of the country, especially in the evenings. Out on the Cayes, you can enjoy tropical breezes wafting through the palm trees, providing you with natural air conditioning! Temperatures along the coast are 20°C - 30°C for most of the dry season but can reach up to 38°c s during April and May. Water temperatures along the barrier reef are generally around the 25°c range.  From June through December, the weather is hot and humid. The amount of rainfall varies widely from north to south. Belize lies in the hurricane belt - these often arrive later in the season, between August and the end of October.

What is the accommodation like?

In Belize, we have selected a variety of charming accommodations ranging from thatched-roof jungle cabins to comfortable city hotels with all of the modern conveniences. Generally, we use accommodations in the 3* to 5 * categories that are locally owned and characteristic of each area. Ask us for your preferred accommodation range.

Do I need a converter/ adapter for the electricity?

Belize uses 110 volts, 60-cycle electricity, the same as the US. Plugs are typically the 2-pronged flat type, so US travelers will not usually need a converter or adapter. Outlets rarely have three holes as in the UK so if your device has a third prong, bring an adapter.

Are meals included?

We have tried to balance flexibility and convenience regarding meal options. For this reason, we include meals on any of our tour days when you are traveling off the beaten path where restaurant choices are limited. In the major towns, where there are a wide variety of restaurants, we generally do not include meals to allow our travelers the flexibility of choosing their food preferences. Your guide or hotel staff can recommend some great restaurant options. Your hotel will also provide a light continental breakfast on these days. Included meals are listed in each tour itinerary.

What are the guides like?

All of our guides are exceptional! They are from the local areas where they guide and are among the best guides in each region. Our guides treat our travelers like friends, showing visitors the significant highlights and the local treasures.

What type of transportation is used?

Our Belize tours utilize a variety of private transportation vans/ cars, motor boats, flights, canoes, kayaks, etc. Each itinerary tour page describes the transportation included on that tour. If you have additional questions, ask us!

What type of food is typical of Belize?

Some everyday foods travelers can expect in Belize are rice, beans, tortillas, tropical fruit, and fresh vegetables in Belize. Much of the cuisine is borrowed from Mexico, the US, the UK, and the Caribbean.

Are your trips suitable for children?

Absolutely!! Belize has a lush jungle, rainforest, wildlife, and beautiful tropical rivers. Additionally, Belize has a diversity of cultures, mystical ancient Mayan ruins, the second-largest barrier reef in the world, and an English-speaking population. Belize is a compact country which means less time spent traveling and more time for your family to explore and enjoy the sights. Activities on our Belize tours range from adventurous to relaxing and can be adapted to suit your family's preferred pace. Many of the jungle lodges do not have television. Some tours have longer travel times or more rugged accommodations, so these may be more suitable for older children. We realize that you know your kids best, so we will be happy to answer all of your questions and try to give you the most accurate impression of what to expect. However, these are adventure tours, and flexibility is essential!

Do tour rates include international flights?

Tour rates do not include international flights. We find that it is usually less expensive for travelers to book these separately, allowing you the flexibility to choose the schedule and routing that is most convenient for you. You can purchase international flights directly online.

How do I get to the hotel from the airport when I arrive?

Transfers to/from the airport are included for all of our tours.

How much should I budget for tips?

It is customary in Latin America to offer a small tip for exceptional service. Tipping amounts vary widely, though some travelers report that ~$2-$10/ day for your guide and ~$1-$3/ day for your driver is expected. Other travelers opt to bring small gifts from home to give to service providers along the way.

Are there any discounts available?

How far in advance should I book?

You can book your Belize tour any time; generally, the earlier you book, the better. For most dry season departures, four months' notice is recommended. If you book at least six months in advance, you will usually find better availability for departures during school holidays (Spring break and Christmas). Travelers visiting during the shoulder season (May-June and November) can often book last minute, though 2-3 months’ notice is still recommended. We usually recommend waiting to book your international flights until after your tour is confirmed. The sooner we arrange your tour, time sooner you can take advantage of flight deals as they become available. For last-minute bookings, it helps to be flexible and organized. Your first choice tour may not be available for your selected dates, but your travel designer can probably recommend some other similar options that would be equally interesting! Many lodges will not hold spaces less than 30 days before departure, so for last-minute bookings, you will be asked to send your registration form and trip payment right away to secure your spaces.

Are tour dates flexible?

YES. Most tours can be arranged on your preferred departure dates for a minimum of two travelers, depending on availability at the lodges/ hotels. Ask us for availability!

Can I extend my stay or add on extra tours?

Absolutely! Extra days can be arranged in most areas if desired. Let us know how you would like to customize your trip, and we will assist you!

What should I pack?

Bring long sleeves, a fleece/ sweater for cool highland evenings, and plenty of comfortable, breathable clothes for hot jungle days. Good walking shoes, insect repellent, and sun protection are also essential.

How safe is Belize?

Though we have no safety concerns on our tours, crime can be a severe problem in Belize City. Travelers should take common sense precautions such as avoiding walking alone or at night and not carrying valuables. Hotels can store your valuables in a safe if desired.
Outside of the city, pickpocketing can still be a concern around crowded tourist sites and resorts. Check out the US State Department travel advisories for the latest information.

Is the water safe to drink?

Tap water is generally not safe to drink in Belize. Bottled water is readily available at tourist sites, hotels, and restaurants. Don't forget to use bottled water when brushing your teeth as well! Ice is not always made with boiled/ bottled water. Order your beverages without ice or ask your guide if the ice is safe in a restaurant.

What vaccinations are recommended/ required?

No vaccinations are required for visiting Belize except for your Covid 19 vaccination card (see below). A yellow fever certificate if you are arriving in Belize after visiting an infected area, such as the Amazon. Hepatitis A and Typhoid are recommended. Medications to prevent malaria are also recommended, though some travelers opt not to take them. Check out this blog about Covid restrictions in the country and how this may affect your travel.

Do I need a visa/passport?

Travelers will all need a passport valid for at least six months after they depart. Visas are not currently required for US, European Community, or British Commonwealth travelers. Travelers from other nationalities should check with the Belizean Embassy or consulate for visa information. Entry requirements change with surprising frequency. It is each traveler’s responsibility to check with the consulate for the most up-to-date visa information.

What is the local currency, exchange rate, etc.?

The local currency is the Belizean dollar. The exchange rate is US$1 = BZ$2, though many banks will give you a slightly lower rate. Most restaurants, markets, and other service providers will readily accept US dollars. They will generally give you a change in Belizean dollars unless you request otherwise.
 Should I bring cash? Are ATMs available? Can I use credit cards?
US cash is the most accessible form of money to use. For security, a combination of ATM cards and credit cards is recommended. ATMs are readily available in Belize City, but travelers may have trouble accessing them elsewhere. Credit cards are accepted in larger restaurants and stores.

Can I use my cell phone?

Check with your cell phone provider. Each company is different, and they can give you the most up-to-date information.

What time zone is Belize?

Belize is six hours behind GMT (same as CST). They do not observe daylight-saving time, so during these months (April-October), Belize is on MST.

 Is travel insurance recommended?

Absolutely!!! Travel insurance is always recommended for trip cancellation, medical expenses, evacuation, lost bags, etc.
