There are so many unique things about Chile, a country with one of the longest coastlines on the planet, the driest place on Earth, a world-class wine producer…and then, there is Easter Island! How can there NOT be any interesting facts about this incredible country?

 

The Marble Caves

 

Chile is the longest country in the world from north to south at 4125 km /2,653 miles.

One of the world's lowest divorce rates is in Chile, and divorce was only legalized in 2005.

Chile is the world's fifth-largest wine exporter, with 100 wineries.

More than half of the country's plants and animals are found nowhere else. Of its 5,100 species of flora and fauna, more than 2,500 are endemic.

You can also find the world's driest desert, the Atacama, in Chile, and this place has not seen a single drop of rain since record-keeping began.

Chile has more than 1300 volcanoes, of which 500 are active.

The biggest earthquake ever recorded on Earth, measuring 9.5 on the Richter scale, hit Chile in 1900. The catastrophe killed more than 1500 people and left 2000 homeless.


Chileans refer to their land as a "country of poets." They have two Nobel Prize winners in Literature: Gabriela Mistral – 1945 (she is also depicted on 5,000-peso bank notes) and Pablo Neruda – 1971.

Chile is an astrologer's dream. Astrologers from around the world come to the country to make their observations, as there are more than 300 nights of clear weather available in the Norte Grande part of Chile.

Chile is home to the oldest mummy, a 'Chinchorro mummy' found in the Camarones Valley in 5050 BC. To date, 282 such mummies have been found in the country.

Chile is one of the world's largest producers of copper.

Chile is almost devoid of poisonous snakes. There are only two species of snakes in Chile, and both are small and relatively harmless.

The enormous anthropomorphic figure in the world is also located in Chile at Cerro at 119 m high.

Chileans keep their surnames when getting married. It's a common practice in many cultures to have the wife adopt the groom's surname. However, in Chilean culture, men and women often keep their names when getting married. 

The Chilean Easter Island is one of the most remote islands in the world inhabited by people. It is especially famous for the giant head statues, known as moai, created by the Rapa Nui people.
