This largely undiscovered gem in Central America, Panama is the perfect place to visit for adventurous travellers and nature-lovers. With literally thousands of desert islands, indigenous tribes and spectacular natural destinations, there are a multitude of unique activities and experiences, simply waiting to be discovered. Here are our preferred “off-the-beaten-track experiences, to discover in Panama!

San Blas islands

Wake up on a desert island on The San Blas Islands

San Blas is an archipelago made up of over 360 tropical islands, just off Panama’s northern coastline and is the home to the Guna Yala indigenous people. Getting to San Blas can be a little tricky, however it is worth every effort to visit these precious islands. The indigenous Guna people are keen to preserve their lands and they are in control of tourism on the islands. San Blas is one of the few places in the world where, you can actually visit a deserted island by yourself and be the only person there. Scenes of Tom Hanks´s hideaway, with white sand, warm crystal clear, turquoise ocean and coconut palms. A genuine piece of paradise in central America and one of the most unique experiences to have in Panama.

Hike the Darién Gap on the Colombian border

The Darién National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which is possibly more famous for being a drug smuggling gateway between Panama and Colombia, and is not particularly known for tourism. Home to coral snakes, poisonous frogs, scorpions and spiders, it is not your usual vacation destination! As you trek through the mud, you may however, spot fresh jaguar tracks, and you will be able to observe some of the most fascinating birds in Darién, which is one of the world’s top bird watching destinations. Though it is a somewhat, adventurous trip, however with decent preparation and an expert guide, trekking the Darién Gap will truly be a one-in-a-lifetime experience.

Visit the Emberá indigenous people

One of the main attractions of Panama is the opportunity to meet indigenous tribes. The Emberá are a nomadic tribe, from the Darién province, and are some of the most friendly and welcoming people, they open the doors of their villages to lucky visitors who come to discover their way of life. You can do a day tour, or spend the night at the village for the total cultural immersion experience. Enjoy watching the adults making their traditional handicrafts, women cooking and children playing.

Santa Catalina is a true gem off the Pacific Coast of Panama, in front of an archipelago made up of 38 islands including the impressive marine park of Isla Coiba. Known for its scuba diving and snorkelling activities, it is reminiscent of the Galapagos islands in Ecuador. Coiba is definitely one of the best destinations to see extremely diverse and unique sub-aqua life in Central America.

Take in both the Pacific and the Atlantic Oceans from the summit of the Barú Volcano

The dormant Barú Volcano is one of the only places in the world where you can see both the Pacific and the Atlantic Oceans at the same time. Close to the stunning mountain of Boquete, the volcano is a main attraction to the country, however it is a somewhat challenging hike. In order to make it to the summit before the sun rises above the clouds, many people actually choose to start climbing around midnight.

Whale watching in the Pearl Islands

From the months of June to November, whales migrate to the Pacific Ocean coastal region of Panama to mate. The impressive humpback whales are visible from a few strategic points in the country, including the stunning Pearl Islands, close to Panama City. Bottlenose and pantropical spotted dolphins can also be spotted along the coastline. Panama protects the different whale species, and supports the ban on whale hunting from the International Whaling Commission.The Pearl islands in general are an excellent place to see these incredible sea creatures

Surf in Playa Venao

Playa Venao, is located on the Pacific Coast of Panama and is considered one of the country’s best surf beaches. With waves that break both to the left and right, and a sandy floor, it is an excellent place for beginners to begin their surf adventure, but also a favourite destination for the more advanced surfers. The main advantage is that it is possible to surf year-round and the beach is home to a vibrant beach community, with lots of hostels, eco-lodges and bungalows. Prepare for some cool beach parties with like-minded travellers.

Cross the Panama Canal by boat

The Panama Canal is Panama´s main source of revenue as well as one of the most impressive engineering feats of all time. Following the canal´s recent expansion, it has now doubled its capacity. Approximately 80 km long, the canal flows between the Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans, going from the capital to the city of Colón. There are a number of ways to visit the canal, though the most exciting one is to cross it from end to end by boat on a canal cruise!

Island hop in Bocas del Toro

Home to some fantastic natural wonders, the archipelago of Bocas del Toro is a sanctuary of raw beauty made up of nine principal islands and hundreds of islets and cayes. The best way to experience this tropical island chain is on a wooden motorboat from Bocas Town, on the island of Colón, then go Island hopping! You can discover idyllic beaches, diverse marine life, the coral reefs of the Zapatilla Islands, subterranean lakes and an array of dolphins, where the warm ocean meets the mangroves.
