Trip Overview
Coiba National Park is one of the most beautiful paradises on earth. Found on the Azuero Peninsula, this archipelago is internationally recognized as the third-largest marine park in the world, after the Galapagos Islands and the coral reef of Australia. The island of Coiba was inhabited by indigenous people until the early 16th century when Spanish conquerors took all its inhabitants to work in the gold mines of the Darien. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015, Coiba National Park boasts incredible biodiversity due to the island being used as a penal colony, restricting access to the area. The National Park consists of Coiba and 38 smaller islands in the surrounding waters. The National Park is the natural habitat of 1,450 species of plants, approximately 36 mammal species, 147 birds and 39 amphibians and reptiles. Coiba is the ideal place to practice diving as the calm, crystal clear waters are perfect to see sea life such as the whale shark, manta rays, dolphins, humpback whales and killer whales.

Day by day schedule
Day 01 -Panama City - Malena and Palo Seco
The first day involves a transfer from Panama City to the town of Malena and Palo Seco. We will settle into the hotel and have a briefing early evening. The guide will give us an overview of the next few days, taking into account the tides, what to bring and answer any questions you may have.
Day 02 -Coiba
Early in the morning, we will head to the harbour where we will take a boat along the northern shores of Cébaco Island, passing Santa Catalina and then straight to Coiba. Along the way, we can appreciate pelicans, frigate birds, terns and dolphins. We will arrive at Coiba for a snorkelling trip near the Granito de Oro. This island is famous for turtles and large schools of reef fish. We will then take a hike to the Sendero dos Monos to look for monkeys and birds native to the area. Passing through the primary rainforest, we will head back to the ANAM camp to explore the trails or chill out in a hammock for the evening.
Day 03 -Coiba
Today, we will head out to two of the other reefs. The Isla Machete is the habitat for octopus, snappers, white-tip reef-sharks, as well as manta rays. Cocos Island reef is the home of moray eels. In the afternoon we will visit the mangrove, to see many species of water birds and maybe a crocodile or 2. We will then hike along the Los Pozos trails through secondary vegetation to the hot springs. This is an excellent place to spot monkeys and the native Coiba Spinetail. Return to the ANAM camp late in the afternoon.
Day 04 -Coiba – Panama City
We will set out early to make the most of the day, visiting another coral reef to see the different species. We will then return to the Heliconia hotel for lunch and to freshen up. This marks the end of this incredible snorkelling extension!
