Coiba National Park is one of the most beautiful paradises on earth. Found on the Azuero Peninsula, this archipelago is internationally recognized as the third-largest marine park in the world, after the Galapagos Islands and the coral reef of Australia. The island of Coiba was inhabited by indigenous people until the early 16th century when Spanish conquerors took all its inhabitants to work in the gold mines of the Darien. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015, Coiba National Park boasts incredible biodiversity due to the island being used as a penal colony, restricting access to the area. The National Park consists of Coiba and 38 smaller islands in the surrounding waters. The National Park is the natural habitat of 1,450 species of plants, approximately 36 mammal species, 147 birds and 39 amphibians and reptiles. Coiba is the ideal place to practice diving as the calm, crystal clear waters are perfect to see sea life such as the whale shark, manta rays, dolphins, humpback whales and killer whales.
