Mexico is well known for its beachfront hotel resorts. However, there are many boutique options as well as hostels and cabañas. Basically every type of accommodation you can think of! All the hotel chains are present in the bigger cities and touristic destinations. Boutique hotels are usually found in modernised colonial buildings and are a great option if you are looking for something with a little more originality. The next options are the bed and breakfasts, which are exactly what they say they are! In Oaxaca, there is actually an association of B and Bs. Always check that they come with the facilities you need, for example, WIFI if you need it. Around the Yucatan, there are a19th century haciendas for an alternative option. There are even options to do a farm stay to connect with nature, such as around Puerto Vallarta. Hostels are great if you are looking to meet other travellers or on a tight budget. They are widely available in the beach areas. These usually have shared facilities and are basic but with great locations. Beach locations offer cabañas and are quite rustic but right on the beach. Camping is not recommended on the beaches for safety reasons and there are cheaper options in any case.

Accommodation

The Mexican Peso rules in Mexico. The country is, in general, a Cash country. Credit cards are accepted in hotels and restaurant but cash rules. The government is trying to amend this along with activist groups. Mexico City has a large and open gay community and there are plenty of resorts catering for gay people in the beach areas. Gay Pride is a particularly open and free festival each year also.

Mexico is a country full of colour, tradition, culture, song and dance. There are many indigenous cultures still in Mexico and they are incredibly proud of their ancient traditions and customs. There is a massive arts movement of which Frida Kahlo is possible one of the most famous names.
Race is a delicate topic, especially when it refers to the indigenous people of Guatemala. Never use the word "Indio" this is deeply offensive and stick to "indigeno" if referring to an indigenous person. African or Afro-Americans visiting, will find the locals more inquisitive than racist.
People are a mixture of Catholic and indigenous religions, always ask before taking part in any traditional ceremony and always ask before taking a photo.

Culture

Mexicans love their football! As is the case with most Central American countries.
Day of the dead is a massive countrywide celebration of the people who have passed.

Marimba music comes from this area also and be heard blasting out in most places.

Mexico has some of the best dishes and street food in the world! The popularity of Mexican food in other countries is huge, but remember that these Mexican restaurants in your home country are likely to bear no resemblance to actual Mexican cuisine! Restaurants, fast food, street stalls abound, Mexico is a culinary heaven! The basic staple ingredients in Mexican food are beans, elote (corn) rice and chilli in all their various forms.
Tortillas are the next staple food source and come in various forms as tacos, enchiladas, quesadillas and burritos all with a filling of vegetables, meat or chicken and of course, chilli.
Mexico also has its own version of tamales either sweet or savoury!
Meat, in general, is not of a decent quality in Mexico and if it just says meat, it is usually pork.
Seafood is fresh, delicious and amazing on the coastal areas.
Mexicans love their eggs and so they should! Always tasty and organic they are a welcome addition to most meals.
Chocolate was invented in Mexico. Try the classic Mole for a traditional chocolate and chilli dish of Mexico.
Chocolate is the basis for a lot of desserts in Mexico. Churros and dulce de leche also are popular in many desserts. For the sweeter tooth and there are a million to choose from!
The juices and licuados in Mexico are special, fresh and delicious. All of the fruits are available and all the flavours…enjoy! The coffee is also spectacular and Mexico produces its own coffee! Coffee and hot chocolate are king in Mexico!
Alcoholic drinks abound from the Tequila and Mescal and Pulque are the traditional brews and Sol, Dos Equis and Tecate the most popular beers on a nice hot afternoon.

Eating and drinking

Mexico has a good level of private health care, so it is important to make sure you have a comprehensive travel insurance policy that has medical cover, also. The national health care system is of a generally lower quality. There are decent private clinics in all major cities; however, the more remote the destination, the lower the health care facilities. The main issues are generally mosquito-borne illnesses such as malaria, chikungunya, zika and dengue. Visit your local travel clinic before you go and pack a DEET insect repellent.!
Water is heavily chlorinated but still is not worth the risk. Salads will be washed, but you should check the water source of what they are washed in! Traveller's diarrhoea is common in Mexico due to the lower standards of water quality, so take stomach medication with you. Amoebic illnesses are also common with Giardia being common as well as traveller’s diarrhoea. Snakes and scorpions are also present to beware in rural areas. The pharmacies in Mexico are generally well-stocked, but it's always a good idea to travel with your basic first aid kit.
