Day by day schedule
Day 1:Welcome to Mexico
From the moment you arrive in Mexico City airport, a team member of Va Expeditions will be waiting for you at the airport to take you, in private transport, to your hotel. Once you are settled in your hotel, your expert Naturalist guide, will give you a briefing about the tour. Your guide will tell you about the activities and security as well as some fun facts about the Monarch Butterfly tour in Mexico.

Day 2:Mexico City to Valle de Bravo
Mexico City Anthropological Museum
After our breakfast at the hotel, we will visit the Anthropology Museum, one of the world’s finest archaeological museums with a huge collection of artifacts in 23 exhibition halls. The National Museum of Anthropology, located in the heart of Mexico City, stands as a remarkable testament to Mexico's rich and diverse cultural heritage. Established in 1964, this world-renowned museum is a treasure trove of artifacts, artworks, and exhibits that showcase the history, traditions, and civilizations of the indigenous peoples of Mexico. Nestled within the expansive Chapultepec Park, the museum's impressive architecture and comprehensive collections make it a must-visit destination for both locals and visitors seeking to delve into the country's ancient past. Among the museum's most famous exhibits is the awe-inspiring "Aztec Sun Stone" or "The Stone of the Fifth Sun." This massive circular stone monument, weighing over 24 tons, was discovered in Mexico City in 1790 and is believed to be an Aztec calendar. It showcases intricate carvings representing various cosmic elements, gods, and mythological symbols, making it an extraordinary representation of Aztec cosmology. After this fascinating visit we will leave the capital and depart to Valle de Bravo. Valle de Bravo is a charming and picturesque town nestled in the heart of the State of Mexico, approximately 156 kilometers southwest of Mexico City. Renowned for its stunning natural beauty, the town is perched on the shores of Lake Avándaro, surrounded by lush pine-covered hills and mountains. The town's cobblestone streets, colonial architecture, and vibrant colors create a captivating atmosphere, making it a popular destination for both local and international tourists seeking a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of city life. Valle de Bravo's main attraction is undoubtedly Lake Avándaro, a vast and pristine body of water that offers a myriad of recreational activities such as sailing, water skiing, fishing, and kayaking. The lake's scenic beauty is further accentuated by the backdrop of verdant hills, making it an ideal spot for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. Day 3:Valle de Bravo - Piedra Herrada Sanctuary
Today we will visit the Piedra Herrada Sanctuary, located on the western slopes of the Nevado de Toluca, meaning that the landscape is made up of high and imposing mountains that exceed 3,000 meters in altitude. The Piedra Herrada Sanctuary (Santuario de la Mariposa Monarca Piedra Herrada) is a remarkable natural reserve located in Mexico. It is renowned for its crucial role as a wintering site for millions of monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus) that migrate from Canada and the United States. In this area, the Monarch Butterfly finds oyamel fir trees, a tree that provides them with the conditions they need to grow and reproduce. The sanctuary plays a critical role in the conservation of the monarch butterfly species, which faces various threats, including habitat destruction and climate change. The Mexican government and environmental organizations have been actively working to protect the monarch butterflies and their wintering grounds. To access this space, you will head out on foot or on horseback, guided by local people. These trained guides provide valuable insights into the monarch butterfly migration, their biology, and the importance of preserving their habitat. Besides the butterfly observation, visitors can enjoy the beautiful natural surroundings, take part in hiking trails, and appreciate the diverse flora and fauna of the region. The sanctuary and the monarch butterfly migration hold cultural significance for the local communities and indigenous groups, who see the butterflies' arrival as a spiritual event. To ensure the butterflies' well-being and minimize human impact, there are strict regulations for visitors, including designated trails and restrictions on touching the butterflies. For 40 minutes walking through valleys surrounded by forests to discover the resting place of the butterflies, where you can watch them flutter enjoying their day to day life.

Day 4:Valle de Bravo - Visit to the Capulin Butterfly Sanctuary
Today we visit the Capulin Sanctuary. Ecotourism lovers will have a masterful experience when visiting the Ejido El Capulín sanctuary, located in the municipality of Donato Guerra 80 kilometers west of Toluca. You will have to travel four kilometers on foot from the El Capulín farmhouse. The walk will be almost imperceptible thanks to the sublime landscape that you will observe in the coniferous forests and the reward will be gratifying when seeing thousands of
butterflies’ flutter around you among oyameles and pines. In this sanctuary you can see the largest and most beautiful plain in the Monarch region called Los Tres Gobernadores, and due to the position of the access and the hibernation colonies it is possible to observe an impressive transition of the vegetation that is attractive for those who like nature. In addition to the mesmerizing butterfly spectacle, the Santuario Capulín offers visitors the chance to immerse themselves in the beauty of the surrounding natural environment. The area is rich in flora and fauna, making it a great spot for nature lovers and photographers. The sanctuary's peaceful atmosphere and the presence of these gentle creatures create a unique and unforgettable experience for all who visit. The distance of the route to arrive at where the butterfly colonies are can be up to 4 km hiking but the hike is always more than worth the while!

Day 5:Morning Butterfly Farm Visit
Today we will visit a unique local farm that reproduces Monarch butterflies and keeps learning from this impressive species and how you can help protect them. The primary goal of the farm is to protect the Monarch butterflies and their habitat. To achieve this, the farm may collaborate with local environmental organizations, governmental bodies, and researchers to implement conservation initiatives. The farm creates a butterfly-friendly environment by cultivating nectar-rich plants and host plants that cater to the butterflies' needs. These plants serve as essential food sources and breeding grounds for the Monarch butterflies. The farm plays a role in educating visitors, tourists, and local communities about the importance of Monarch butterfly conservation. Educational programs, guided tours, and interactive exhibits may be offered to raise awareness about the butterflies' life cycle, migration, and ecological significance. Enjoy a free afternoon in Valle de Bravo Take a leisurely stroll through the town's cobblestone streets and soak in the local atmosphere. Valle de Bravo is known for its colorful buildings, artisanal shops, and quaint cafes, making it a pleasant place to explore on foot. Spend some time at the town's main square, Zócalo, where you can relax on benches, people-watch, and admire the colonial architecture. The square often hosts local events and performances. Valle de Bravo is located on the shores of Lake Avándaro, offering a scenic setting for various water activities. You can rent a boat, go sailing, paddleboarding, or simply relax by the lakeside and enjoy the view. If you're feeling adventurous, consider trying paragliding. Valle de Bravo is famous for its paragliding opportunities, offering breathtaking views of the lake and surrounding mountains. The Church of Saint Francis of Assisi is one of the town's main landmarks and offers a great example of colonial architecture. It's worth a visit for its historic significance and beautiful interior. Valle de Bravo has several markets where you can find local crafts, artwork, and traditional Mexican goods. Visiting the markets is an excellent way to support local artisans and bring back unique souvenirs. Treat yourself to a relaxing afternoon at one of the town's spas, where you can enjoy massages, hot springs, and various wellness treatments. Don't forget to try the local Mexican cuisine at one of the town's restaurants or eateries. Valle de Bravo offers a variety of delicious dishes, and you can find everything from traditional Mexican fare to international cuisine.

Day 6:Valle de Bravo- Mexico City
Today we will leave Valle de Bravo and head back to Mexico City. We will check into the hotel and leave our bags, to head out on a City Tour to the historical center of Mexico City. You will start your Mexico City tour at the heart of the city, where this UNESCO World Heritage site boasts stunning colonial buildings and plazas. Marvel at the grand Metropolitan Cathedral, an impressive example of Spanish Renaissance architecture, which took almost three centuries to complete. The palacio de Bellas Artes is an impressive sight in the center and this iconic building is not only a marvel of architecture but also a hub of artistic expression, housing an impressive collection of visual and performing arts. Embarking on a journey to the Palacio de Bellas Artes is an immersive experience that allows visitors to witness the fusion of traditional and modern art forms in a setting that has become the cultural pride of Mexico. Nearby, the National Palace houses Diego Rivera's famous murals, depicting Mexico's rich history from pre-Hispanic times to the Mexican Revolution.
