Rosario Islands

The Rosario Islands are an archipelago comprising 27 islands within a national park off the coast of Cartagena.  Here, you’ll find dreamy Caribbean beaches without the crowds, and calm, clear waters decorated with coral reefs and shoals of colorful fish. Just southwest of Cartagena, Baru Island allures visitors with its white sandy beaches. Playa Blanca, Colombia is the most popular and it can get busy during the day, so the earlier you get there, the more chance you have of finding a quiet spot. You can buy a "cocada" from one of the local vendors; these sweet coconut treats are the perfect refreshment on a hot day. Along the beach, there are several places to rent lounge chairs and beach tents. Baru Island is a small jungle-covered island that overlooks the Utria Inlet, and Playa Blanca, Colombia is one of the most popular beaches on the country's Caribbean coast. The island is also home to some of the tastiest local dishes, and humpback whales make a yearly appearance from July to October. It is the perfect beach for activities such as scuba diving or snorkeling due to its crystal-clear turquoise waters and colorful corals, as well as hiking through the wild mangroves in the surrounding area.

San Andres Island

The San Andrés archipelago consists of three major islands: San Andrés, Providencia, and Santa Catalina. Though these tiny islands are actually much closer to Nicaragua than they are to mainland Colombia, they are a hugely popular vacation spot for Colombians. On the seahorse-shaped island of San Andrés is the protected four-hectare coral islet known as Johnny Cay. Covered in coconut plantations, Johnny Cay is home to easily one of the most famous beaches in Colombia's archipelago. Johnny Cay boasts huge coral formations and lush vegetation scattered around the edges of the isle; plus its shallow waters are perfect for snorkeling. Find a seat at the wooden shack-styled restaurants and bars that caress the coastline and grab lunch while swaying to reggae music that echoes along the beachside.

Providencia Island

225 km off Nicaragua's Atlantic Coast is the small Colombian island of Providencia, known for some of the most beautiful and unspoiled beaches in the country. Providencia is largely protected and free of large-scale buildings, instead mostly surrounded by sand, palm trees, and mangroves.  In Providencia in particular, the diving and snorkeling conditions are superb, while the golden sand beaches and friendly locals only add to its appeal. Wander to the edge of Playa Manzanillo on the southeast coast of the island, or take a stride over to Bahia Sur Oeste, Providencia's longest beach that serves some of the island's best seafood. Be sure to make your way to Bahia Maracaibo, found on the east side of the island, to catch a glimpse of  Providencia's most beautiful landscape. Here you'll find McBean Lagoon, McBean National Park, and Crab Caye with waters perfect for both canoeing and snorkeling.
