Trip Overview

Mexico is home to spectacular archaeological sites, colonial cities, natural marvels, and authentic culture expressed in music, folklore dances, gastronomy, and most importantly, art. The city is renowned for its famous artists such as Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, Rufino Tamayo, David Alfaro Siqueiros and Diego Rivera, to name but a few. Innovative, vibrant, thriving are just a few of the adjectives used to describe Mexican art. Mexican art is exemplary and Mexico City contains a rich plethora of art, ranging from paintings to pottery, artisan craftwork, architecture, photography and murals. Mexico City is rich in heritage and this art tour will show you some of the best examples of its rich heritage. This will include works by the Socialist muralist Diego Rivera and his wife Frida Kahlo who worked in the capital in The 1920s-1940s. Their home, designed by architect Juan O'Gorman, is now a museum dedicated to the couple and filled with their work and possessions - which we will have the pleasure of visiting. The Blue House is the part of the residence, Kahlo's home, on a quiet street in the smart yet bohemian colonial district of Coyacán.  The Blue House contains works by Kahlo herself, artefacts from her private collection and works by other artists as well as personal items in what was her personal chambers and workshop. We will also visit the wider collection at the Museo of Arte Moderno at Chapultepec Park which exhibits canvasses by other 20th century Mexican artists and the Palacio de Bellas Artes in the historic centre which features vast murals by Rufino Tamayo, David Alfaro Siqueiros and Diego Rivera.

Today we will head out to the ancient town of Cuernavaca, which was founded in 1,200 BC. We will visit the Robert Brady Museum, named after the American artist and collector who lived there for 24 years. There are several paintings by famous Mexican artists, including Frida Kahlo, but the main feature is the sheer immensity and diversity of the collection. We will then continue to the stunning colonial town of Taxco. Along the way, we will appreciate rugged mountains and agricultural land. Arriving at the town, white houses will greet us with red-tiled rooves and the spires of Santa Prisca church rising into the sky. Taxco was declared a national monument, ensuring the preservation of the beautiful mansions built by the city's early silver barons. Taxco is famous for its silver handicrafts with impressive silver jewellery in both traditional and modern designs.

We will head to a silver shop where we will learn all about the silver mining process. The Spanish were drawn to the area in the early sixteenth century by tales of extensive Aztec treasures and this silver boom lasted into the 19th century.

In the morning, we will travel to the historical San Miguel Allende. The elegant colonial buildings and cobbled streets are picture-perfect. There is also a fine selection of art galleries, boutiques and restaurants to explore. The artistic spirit of colonial Mexico is perfectly represented at San Miguel de Allende. Nestled in Mexico’s central highlands, San Miguel de Allende expresses the rich heritage and vibrant cosmopolitan spirit of Guanajuato’s famous "art–tastic" colonial city.
