It’s not a secret that Brazil is one of the most expensive countries in South America. Still, for those travelers who earn in dollars, pounds, or euros, the 4-to-1 exchange rate makes the country surprisingly affordable. It’s important to note that Brazil is a country of extremes. Because of the wide variance of pricing across the country, one of the most common questions we get about it is also one of the most difficult ones to answer: How much does it cost to go to Brazil?

In big cities, such as Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, food and accommodation are considerably more expensive than in other areas of Brazil, but that doesn’t mean you can’t travel in the country on a budget.here’s how much a trip to Brazil costs. If you are traveling during high-season, late-December–mid-March, except during the week of Carnival and New Year’s Day. These are big holidays in Brazil, and prices can vary dramatically. Flying into Brazil

Price varies dramatically for a flight to and from Brazil, depending on where you are coming from. For travelers from Europe, flights are relatively affordable when booked in advance. For travelers departing from Australia or North America, flights are much more expensive, unless you live in Florida, of course, which is the nearest state to Brazil. You will want to book your flights and accommodation well in advance to secure good deals. It takes a little planning, but it’s doable. Check out websites such as KIWI, Expedia or KAYAK for the best deals.

Accommodation

Accommodation will normally take up the major part of your travel budget. Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo are the most expensive cities in Brazil. Still, you might be able to find good deals if you book well ahead, and preferably not during a major holiday. if you plan ahead and book your accommodation well in advance, you can find excellent accommodation in major cities, including affordable hotels in Rio de Janeiro–Brazil’s most visited city. From big cities to small rural towns, you can easily find mid-range accommodation in Brazil for $90/day, often including breakfast. Boutique hotels cost about $120-200 USD per night. Then of course, as Brazil is a land of contrasts in many aspects, accommodation is no exception and the sky is the limit for luxury accommodation. Transportation

Getting around: again, taking advantage of ride-sharing services such as Uber and Lyft will allow you to get to your destinations relatively quickly, and safely. Transportation within cities isn’t expensive or hard to manage on a trip to Brazil. The bus system is always an option and a cheap one too. A one-way ticket costs $1 in most cities. When available, the metro is also not costly, and even Uber is relatively cheap. Please remember that transport is generally included on our excursions in Brazil.

Food

Dinner for two at an upscale restaurant: $50-100 USD. There are also dinner options with a music show, that could cost a little more. Aim at around $30 USD for lunch and breakfast options come in at around $20 USD. Remember you can downscale and upscale as you prefer, however hygiene options a generally much better at higher end establishments. Also, most hotels include breakfast in their tariffs. Some things you have to try in Brazil, such as a caipirinha ($4USD, Prawn skewer 5$ USD and some of the many salgados street food stands, $2-5 USD, after all, when in Rome….

Activities

Between trendy city hotels, in-depth river tours, and a booming food scene, you’ll never run out of luxury experiences here. With an average cost of about $180 USD per day average-mid-top end spends. Tour costs vary depending on the areas you are visiting; however, the general rule is that activities such as day trips in Rio or The Iguazu Falls (more touristic areas) are higher than more off the beaten track destinations. We recommend combining the classic activities with some more remote activities or beach time, to experience all different aspects of Brazil. Ask us Va Expeditions what are some of the best activities to do in the areas you plan to visit!
