Trip Overview
Brazil is the biggest geographical land area in all of South America, with a huge variety of geographical regions, culture and biodiversity. The country has a long and impressive history starting with its native, indigenous people. In the 1600s the Portuguese conquered the country, beating the Spanish to the area. The country became the central extraction point of gold, concentrated in the Minas Gerais region. It was in 1822 that Brazil gained independence from the Portuguese to become an independent state. Today Brazil is an eclectic mixture of Afro Brazilian and European influence which is reflected in its history, culture and regional dishes. Learn some fascinating Brazilian history on your trip to this ex Portuguese colony!

Mariana was also historically important in the “golden age” and The cathedral of Mariana “Catedral da Sé” is particularly interesting, it houses an old Arp Schnitger organ from Germany painted with Chinese symbols.
