Did you know that Brazil is almost the same size as the United States? Its landmass is covered with impressive beaches, dense junglesstunning waterfalls, and wetlands, and has something to offer every kind of traveler. Knowing what to pack and what not to pack can be challenging so I have summarized an essential packing list for Brazil.

Beach Time

Travel-friendly clothes

Travel-friendly clothes that preferably dry quickly. The days you visit Christ the Redeemer may be extremely hot and you will want to be comfortable and avoid dripping with sweat.

A nice outfit (or 2!) for a night out

To completely immerse yourself in Rio culture, you will at some point need to head out on the town! Whether you head to a bar for a classic caipirinha or enjoy a nice dinner and you should not do this in the same clothes you wore to visit Sugarloaf Mountain. Rio’s nightlife is booming and the people dress in a stylish manner with a tropical twist. Keep it lightweight and elegant is the key!

Caiprinhas!

A Decent Daypack

A daypack is nice to have if you know you are going to be venturing out from your hotel or guest house for most of the day. Theft is common in Brazil so always be aware of your surroundings and keep your valuables locked in your hotel safe and just take essential cash with you.  Head out on a full-day excursion or to the beach with all your basic necessities!

Neck Wallet or Money Belt

These are excellent for organization and easy access while traveling. If you are going to carry your phone, credit cards or cash I would highly suggest using a neck wallet used under your clothing so that you don’t have to advertise you are carrying important items on you. Brazil is hot and sticky on the whole and money belts around the waist can be uncomfortable in the heat, but serve the same purpose.

Portable Charger

You can’t go wrong with a portable phone charger while traveling! You always take more photos than you think and charge runs down quite quickly. With possibly a lot of beach time being had, an electricity outlet can be tricky to find so a portable charger can be a life-saver!

Electrolytes

Brazil can be very hot and humid and you may find yourself sweating a lot! Bringing electrolyte tablets that you can put in water will not only help replenish electrolytes you lose when you sweat but will also make you feel a million times better if you find yourself with a hangover after a night of Caipirinhas.

Light weight rain Poncho

You will quite probably be making a trip to the most magnificent waterfalls in the world, Iguazu. Iguazu Falls are located in a tropical region that sees copious amounts of rain. You will be immersed in a dense humid jungle, and it can rain for hours on end, or even the entire day!
When walking around the falls, you will get wet. This wetness is only mist, but it quickly soaks your clothes, hair and electronics! If you want a nice photo near the falls (without wet hair), you are recommended to keep the hood of your rain poncho on until you say “cheese.”

Waterfall and Rain Cover

Decent walking shoes

The Havainana´s won´t cut it when you visit the Iguazu falls or head into The Pantanal! Nature grows free, so keep in mind that the walking paths are not perfect. Kep the flip flops for the beach on this occasion!

Walking Boots

Activated Charcoal

Traveling to other countries often results in an upset stomach, whether it’s caused by the traveling itself or by eating something that doesn’t agree with you. Either way, activated charcoal is an absolute must-have. The charcoal absorbs toxins in your system and helps you carry on with the many fun parts of traveling.

Brazil Power Adapter

You will need to bring a universal power adapter when traveling to Brazil. In Brazil the standard voltage is 127 / 220 V and the frequency is 60 Hz, the power sockets are type N and round. Different regions of the country will use different voltage so keep in mind that you cannot plug in your devices if the local voltage exceeds the maximum voltage that is listed on your devices.

Standard Brazil Socket

Virtual Private Network (VPN)

Virtual Private Network (VPN) provides an additional level of security that could mean the difference between safely going online at cafe’s, airports, and hotels and having your private information like credit card numbers hacked or stolen. It’s a scary prospect, but this is a common issue and a previously installed VPN is inexpensive and easy-to-use which can keep you safe with the touch of a button!

Sturdy Sandals

Bring a pair of comfortable, waterproof sandals that are versatile and can be worn at the beach or around town. Many Brazilian cities are best enjoyed on foot so make sure the footwear you bring is comfortable enough to walk in for long periods of time. They will become your best friend as they keep your feet cool, are sturdy, reliable and perfect for any trip to Brazil.

It´s Not All Beaches!

Quick-Dry Travel Towel

An incredibly versatile item, you can’t go wrong bringing a quick dry towel with you to Brazil. Perfect for a day at the beach, a boat ride, or a hike through the rainforest, a lightweight microfiber towel dries incredibly quickly, and can easily be tossed in your beach bag or daypack. This will also come in handy as a bath towel should you find yourself in need of one.

Travel Insurance for Brazil

This is an absolute must for traveling in Brazil. If something goes wrong on your trip, such as theft, accident, medical emergency, or the dreaded Covid 19, you’ll need a plan, and the easiest way is to choose coverage from a Travel Insurance company. www.worldnomads.com have a good reputation for travel insurance in South America, so that you can fully concentrate on your trip.

Brazilian Portuguese Phrasebook

Having a phrasebook is extremely useful while traveling in Brazil. In large cities like Rio and São Paulo you will find many English speakers and be able to communicate easily. However, in the more rural towns of Brazil it can be very hard to find English speakers. Having a few phrases under your belt goes a long way in Brazil and even if you get the pronunciation wrong locals will be very happy that you at least tried to speak Portuguese!

Waterproof Phone Case

From beaches, to lakes, to rivers, to streams, and enormous waterfalls in Brazil, you will likely constantly find yourself near water. Make sure you protect your phone by investing in a high-quality waterproof phone case! Having this type of reliable case will not only protect your phone from water, but sand and dirt also.
