COSTA RICA´S PACIFIC COAST V CARIBBEAN COAST

Costa Rica is a Central American country blessed with two coastlines, both coasts promise adventure and stunning natural beauty, so it is not an easy task if you have to decide between the Pacific coast or the Caribbean coast if you are short on time. Short. The time of year, the climate and what you ultimately want from your trip can all influence your decision. Here are some reasons to consider if you can only visit one coastal region!

It has a better tourist infrastructure

The Pacific coast of Costa Rica is home to luxury hotels and is generally more developed than the Caribbean coast. The Pacific coast is home to fantastic beach towns, dotted along the coast including Samara, Nosara, Tamarindo, Montezuma, Dominical, Santa Teresa, Uvita, Quepos and Drake Bay. There are a variety of accommodation options along the pacific coast, ranging from hostels and budget-friendly hotels to five-star luxury boutique hotels and resorts. These developed beach towns have a myriad of dining options, bars, markets, health clinics, boutiques, yoga studios and other touristic services for visitors to the country.

It’s closer to both of Costa Rica´s international airports

The Pacific coast is more accessible from the Juan Santamaría International Airport in San José and the Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport in Liberia. The Costa Rica Road network is somewhat dubious and some of the roads are downright shocking! but this simply adds to the adventure of Costa Rica travel!

There are more National Parks

The Pacific coast has over 10 national parks and other nature reserves, wildlife refuges, tropical dry forests, rainforests, mangroves, wetlands and coral reefs. These national parks offer amazing opportunities for unique wildlife encounters. Howler, white-faced capuchin and spider monkey sightings are common both inside and outside the reserves, and you could even see humpback whale as they migrate to Costa Rica throughout the year.

The surf is better

The Pacific coast is somewhat famous in the worldwide surf community and the pacific coast is blessed with world-class breaks as well as some more user-friendly waves for beginners.  Tamarindo, Samara and Jaco are great choices for first-timers, beginners and intermediate surfers with a number of surf schools, camps, instructors and surf shops. More experienced surfers will already know where to head for the bigger waves, there are breaks up and down the pacific coast, moving from one spot to another, depending on swell, direction, wind conditions and word gets around quickly where to find the best waves.

There’s less rain

The Pacific coast has two predictable seasons: wet and dry. During the dry season, which lasts a bit longer in the north, there’s almost zero rainfall. January, February and March are exceptionally dry, and every day is with clear skies and sunshine. However, bear in mind that because the dry season is ideal for a beach vacation, it is a lot busier and a more expensive time to visit. Even in the wet season, it doesn´t rain every day, but there is a possibility of storms in the early mornings or evenings.

Reasons to visit the Caribbean coast

It feels a bit more authentic

The Caribbean coast of Costa Rica has been under the radar for quite a while, probably due to the fact it is difficult to get there, however now, a better road infrastructure means accessing this coast has become somewhat easier. There are no big resorts or chain hotels on this coast which is part of the reason why the Caribbean is so authentic and relaxed. Instead, most accommodation comes in the shape of independent boutique hotels, backpacker hostels and ecolodges.

It’s more affordable

While Costa Rica is not a cheap destination to visit, the Caribbean coast is somewhat less expensive than the Pacific coast, mainly due to the lack of luxury accommodations and dining options here. While the Caribbean coast is becoming more popular, most tourists are still backpackers and surfers, so the Caribbean feels much less touristic for visitors and travellers alike.

Tropical vibes and  authentic cuisine 

The Caribbean coast has its own version of traditional Costa Rican dishes. The smells and flavours – such as coconut, ginger, curry, spices, cinnamon and chili peppers go perfectly hand in hand with the palm tree lined beaches, crystal clear waters and lush rainforests. The people are warm, friendly and peaceful, emitting a relaxed vibe and energy, wherever you decide to visit along this coastline.

It has the best beach bars and parties

Daytime along the Caribbean is chilled, but Puerto Viejo de Talamanca is famous for its nightlife. With a fin array of bars, most of them on the beach, the happy hours and weekly specials, pull in the crowds and live music can be found every night of the week. Everyone is out to have a good time, and dancing almost obligatory, with reggae, roots, electronic and dance hall music playing late into the night. It’s the perfect place to let loose and to have some fun.

While there are not as many national parks on the Caribbean coast, the few that exist are amazing. Though you can find some species of wildlife on both coasts, many species only make their home along the Caribbean coast. Four different sea turtle species, nest on the beaches of the Tortuguero National Park. The Cahuita National Park has some of the best coral reefs in the country which make for excellent diving and snorkelling. The sloth sanctuary Tree of Life Wildlife Rescue Centre and the Jaguar Rescue Centre can also be found on the Caribbean coast.

Whichever coast you decide to travel, the upmarket rawness of the Pacific or the laid-back “Pura Vida” vibe of The Caribbean coast, one thing is that you can guarantee the best vacation, if time allows, why not visit both coasts?
