Trip Overview

This adventure, will take us to the indigenous communities of northern Colombia to get to know its incredible people and discover magnificent landscapes. The Ticuna people from the Amazon region especially, have suffered hardship due to their traditional methods of hunting and trade which are no longer viable in modern times. By taking part in this in this trip, you promote social enterprise in these remote communities, so that they are not dependent on the non- sustainable extractive mining. This unique tour helps promote sustainable tourism in their region to develop a way to survive in the modern day, while maintaining their traditions and way of life.

Today you will arrive at the Riohacha airport. We will have lunch at The Parakaa restaurant where your guide will explain the trip in detail, with an immediate departure for Cabo de La Vela. En route, you will pass through Uribia, the indigenous capital of Colombia. Here you will enjoy a full explanation of the community and visit the artisan centre where you can admire the intricate weaving of traditional hammocks and bags. We will then continue along a dirt road that runs parallel to the railway tracks, used to transport coal from the mine to the Bolívar port. The road continues into the desert with its cacti and Wayuu housing on the way to Cabo de La Vela.  Here we will visit the Sacred Hill of the Wayúu Community, the Kamaichi Hill, the Golden Beach and enjoy the sunset at El Faro del Cabo. The Wayuu religion considers Cabo de La Vela as the road where the souls of the dead begin their journey into the beyond.

DAY 3 - Punta Gallinas

Today, we will head to Punta Gallinas, the northernmost point of South America. From Cabo de La Vela onwards, conventional roads no longer exist as we truly escape the beaten path. Instead, we will head along rough and ready dirt roads that only the local inhabitants use. Along the way we can appreciate nature at its wild and rugged best, running into goatherds or the occasional solitary walker, appearing out of nowhere. Arriving in Nazareth, we will enjoy a tour through the dunes of Taroa, transporting you to Sahara- like scenes, and visit the lighthouse, further north. After lunch, we can enjoy an authentic activity of weaving with the local artisan women in Bahía Hondita, a boat ride to visit the nearby islets, sighting of flamingos depending on the season and a spectacular sunset at Punta Aguja. If we are lucky, we may be able to see the releasing of sea turtles from Mato. Punta Gallinas is the northernmost area of the peninsula, where the wind, the solitude, and the ocean's sound are dreamlike and the evening offers the starriest of skies to lull you to sleep.

After breakfast, we will head to the salt marshes of Manaure. These massive salt pools are diversely coloured, varying from white to deep purple. The strong sun and wind generate evaporation that leaves long white stretches, which offer a stunning backdrop. We will spend the afternoon in the Wualapuinje Rancheria with the Wayuu indigenous community, before heading to the Mayapo beaches, where we will enjoy a spectacular sunset at Mayapo beach. We will then head back to the city of Riohacha, marking the end of this incredible insight into local indigenous communities.
