La Paz

La Paz

Overview of La Paz

La Paz is the unofficial capital of Bolivia. The house of congress is here and the government resides in La Paz. The actual constitutional capital is Sucre, but even the president resides in La Paz. La Paz is an incredible example of the traditional and the modern and virtually EVERYTHING is up a hill, as the main road through the centre runs through the base of the La Paz valley. La Paz is a modern, vibrant, busy capital with sites such as the San Francisco church and plaza; the plaza Murillo where the house of congress is. It also has its downtown area, where you can find the incredible witches market and the handicraft stores of the area with a more traditional and authentic way of life on display. La Paz is also the beginning point for many tours and highlights outside of the city, such as "The world's most dangerous road"; Coroico and the entrance to the Amazon; The neighbouring city of El Alto; Lake Titicaca and the Oruro carnival, should you happen to be in the area in February. Oh and don't forget the "Cholita" wresting in the nearby El Alto…a sight not to be missed!

What to Do in La Paz

The world's most dangerous road
The world's most dangerous road

One of the best adventure activities to do in Bolivia has to be the world's most dangerous road. This downhill madness will take you from the snowy Andes at almost 5000 metres elevation, to the sticky jungle, peeling off the layers of clothing as you go! Some of the best views can be seen along the way and some not so nice ones, like the vehicles that went over the edge!

Cholita wrestling in El Alto
Cholita wrestling in El Alto

This is a must-do. Women in traditional dress, sorting out "their issues" in a wrestling ring…what could go wrong? This is a popular activity with locals and a jolly good experience! Take the cable car from the Irpavi teleferico station in La Paz and do 2 of the main sights in one go! The views are breath-taking over the city as you fly over the city to see these incredible, traditional women wrestlers!

The witches Market
The witches Market

Get your cure-alls here! From dried frogs to lucky charms, this traditional market resolves many problems from sex drive to altitude sickness, there is a cure here for everyone, regardless of their problem! There are llama foetuses abound for specific Andean rituals, so not for the queasy! You can also pick up your own personal "Yatiri" to give you a traditional, spiritual cleansing !

Tiahuanaco
Tiahuanaco

Tiahuanaco is considered one of the most important pre Inca civilizations found on the South shores of Lake Titicaca. The Tiwanaku empire remained strong until 1000 A.D., when its decline began. It´s population started to decrease, likely because of a drought that made it difficult to grow enough food, but some archaeologists believe a violent public uprising was to blame. By 1150, the Tiwanaku empire was no more. Its importance lived on under the Inca empire, where the Incas used many of the architectural techniques of the Tiahuanaco´s and which can be seen to this day.
